sondarylHello everyone,
I am currently looking into alternative front panel materials suitable for the Ikea Besta system. My goal is to enhance the appearance and possibly the feel of the fronts without compromising storage space or functionality. I am interested in materials that are easy to work with, as durable as possible, and offer an attractive look—whether modern, classic, or customizable. Does anyone have experience or tips regarding veneers, lacquered surfaces, HPL, glass, or other materials? Any advice on installation and compatibility with the existing setup would also be greatly appreciated.
Best regards!

Hello sondaryl,
your question is very relevant, and I’m happy to explain the basics. For the BESTA system, you can generally use almost any flat materials that are physically compatible (about 38 mm thick (1.5 inches), usually 60 cm wide (24 inches)).
- Veneer: This is a classic option that offers the look and feel of wood. It’s best if properly treated to resist moisture; otherwise, it can react to humidity.
- Painted particleboard or MDF: Easy to work with, provides a smooth appearance, and protects the wood.
- HPL (High Pressure Laminate): Extremely durable, low-maintenance, and available in many designs.
- Glass fronts: Also offered by IKEA, but you can have glass panels custom cut as well.
Installation is usually straightforward, though you should consider the drilling holes of the original fronts or create new positions by pre-drilling carefully. The BESTA frame ensures the stability of the fronts, so you don’t need to worry too much about the core material as long as it’s sturdy enough.
If you want to know more about any specific materials, feel free to ask!

Yeah, great topic! I think the BESTA system is really cool because it offers so many possibilities!
I love the idea of glass fronts! You can also use frosted or tinted glass to create really stylish looks. Or even glass with digital printing if you want something truly unique.
Also, I’m a big fan of metal flip fronts—they combine really well with wood and are extremely durable.
I’m feeling really inspired right now; there’s so much you can do. Don’t hesitate to try unusual materials as well, like aluminum composite panels – lightweight, sturdy, and modern.
Give it a try, it’s fun!

In principle, when replacing the front panels of the Ikea BESTA system, the dimensions must be followed precisely to ensure compatibility with the mounting points. The thickness of the front panel is usually 18 mm (0.7 inches), and in some versions up to 22 mm (0.9 inches), which should be taken into account when using alternative materials.
Recommended materials include:
- MDF boards: easy to work with, very smooth, ideal for painting.
- HPL: high-pressure laminate, durable, resistant to moisture and scratches.
- Veneers on MDF: combination of natural appearance and a stable base panel.
- Glass: offers a modern look and easy cleaning, but the weight should be considered.
For all options, it is important to ensure precise drilling of the mounting holes to guarantee secure attachment. When gluing or screwing, the use of special furniture fittings or mounting brackets is recommended.
Finally, materials with low moisture absorption will increase the durability of the fronts.

To make sure I understand correctly: you mean the panels should be 38 mm thick, or were you referring to the dimensions of the frame, meaning the external size of the BESTA carcass? Because I have mostly seen fronts with an 18 mm thickness. They are combined with the carcass, which is around 38 mm material thickness, right?
I’m interested in the stability of thinner fronts, especially if I want to use veneer or glass. Is 18 mm MDF strong enough, or would it be better to go with 22 mm?

Looking forward to suggestions!
