MrsMisses22 Jan 2016 00:20Hello everyone!
My family and I own a holiday home in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It’s an old bungalow, and I believe my father insulated part of the exterior at some point. Unfortunately, he passed away, so we can’t find out exactly what he did. But he never did anything halfway...
Now we want to renovate and have discovered black mold (or mildew?) spreading under the PVC and carpet flooring.
We don’t know much about construction and are wondering how to proceed. My initial plan was to remove (and dispose of) the flooring, then treat the spots with an anti-mold or mold-inhibiting agent.
How should we proceed from there? I’m not sure how to identify the source of the moisture or if we should simply install tiles over the floor... or what the best approach is. We don’t have the budget to tear up and properly remediate the entire floor.
The house does not have a basement.
Thanks very much for your advice!

Hello!
It is difficult to impossible to even make a guess based on your description.
The damage could come from many sources (water/moisture always finds its way).
- Defective water/sewer pipes
- Leaks in the roof or windows
- Leaks in the facade
- Water entering through the foundation slab (rising damp)
- Condensation moisture (also in connection with incorrect repairs)
- and much more (combinations or multiple causes are quite possible!)
Find a building expert in your area, spend the 150-200 euros, and have the damage and cause assessed objectively.
Removing the floor covering and carrying out mold remediation (here I would recommend a professional rather than just using a spray if the spots are larger): Good idea! Get rid of the contaminated material and then you can clearly see the extent of the issue.
Simply tiling over it afterwards (ostrich principle): A very bad idea with a high potential for the damage to gradually worsen.
Best regards,
Thorsten
