Hello,

I wanted to ask where you source your plants from?

There seem to be some affordable options available online—are they any good?

Or do you only buy trees from a nursery?

If I had known that, I would have chosen hornbeam instead of European beech for the hedge. But who really knows the differences when building a house?!

Well, what can I say... I tend to turn seemingly simple things into a science. Not always an advantage . Since I have long admired beech hedges, I, as a property owner, decided to do some research (in the past I would have had to go to the library, but nowadays you can do it at night with Google)... Anyway, the hornbeam, which is related to the birch family, leafs out earlier, while the European beech or copper beech, both beeches, leaf out a bit later but stay leafy longer. We chose the European beech. Planted last autumn, all plants (40 m (131 feet), 3 per meter (3 per 3.3 feet)) look healthy!

Just a quick note about the shops...

For most trees, a height is given. Wouldn't the trunk circumference be more relevant?

Most trees list the height, but wouldn’t the trunk circumference be more useful?

For some, the trunk circumference is also provided.

I think that is only relevant for large trees. The 120 cm (47 inches) trees have only a very small trunk circumference.

Besides the height, the growth habit, pruning tolerance, and how much space the tree will eventually need in width are also important.

So it's better to buy trees from a nursery after all!
