ᐅ Where can I find building plans or assembly instructions for MALM furniture?

Hello everyone, I have been looking for blueprints for the MALM furniture line from IKEA for some time. I am especially interested in technical drawings or scaled plans that would allow me to either build my own MALM chest of drawers or replicate a similar piece of furniture. Does anyone have an idea where to find such detailed construction plans? I am not only looking for general measurements but precise details including drill hole locations, material thicknesses, and connection methods. It would be great if someone could also share their personal experiences with building a replica. Thanks in advance for your tips!

I am familiar with this issue. I once tried to replicate a Malm dresser but quickly realized that the fittings are a real challenge.

One approach I used was to disassemble old MALM furniture pieces and then redesign everything with a digital sketch. Many screws can be replaced with similar furniture fittings.

The most important thing is to stay flexible – not everything has to be 100% original. In the end, what matters is that the dresser is stable and functional.

If you want to switch to DIY fittings, I can send you links to affordable alternatives.

I really like this topic because it shows how much many people appreciate designer furniture, but often struggle with the technical challenges.

I can easily understand how frustrating it is when you can’t find official building plans.

Maybe the tip to look for reproductions on handicraft or furniture-making forums can help you. Sometimes people share practical experiences there.

Occasionally, there are also used parts available for purchase that you can use as templates. It’s also an option to further develop the good ideas instead of just copying them exactly.

In short: There are no official construction plans.

I would simply measure a dresser precisely and create basic sketches myself. For drill holes, you need to work accurately with templates.

Alternatively, it can help to measure the furniture in an IKEA warehouse if you don’t have any.

I just thought of something: if you want a real insight into the construction method, you can also watch videos of MALM disassemblies online.

These videos often show how the fittings are installed and how the parts are connected.

Although it’s not a building plan or blueprints, it helps with understanding. This way, you might get a better idea of how to recreate something yourself. 🙂

That’s a great tip, Joe52. I would like to add that you can combine these videos with your own measurement sketches.

Also, some websites offer quite detailed PDF files with assembly instructions for MALM, which at least give a basic idea of the types of connections used.

I once built a replica dresser using simple wooden connectors and found this information very helpful. If you like, I can put together a list of useful links.

That sounds very interesting, thank you! I hadn’t really considered exploded diagrams and assembly guides before, even though they probably contain a lot of useful information.

If you have a list of links, I would really appreciate it. Also, for everyone else: What are the best search terms or sources to find such documents reliably and legally?
