ᐅ When did you install the front door?

Hello, I have a question.
When was your front door installed? The reason I ask is that we are building with a general contractor (GC) and have removed the front door because we want an aluminum door. The GC only offers wooden doors.
We are starting construction on Monday, and our GC said we should order the front door now so it can be installed in about 5 weeks (when the shell construction is finished).
Now that I’ve thought about it, I’m wondering if it really makes sense to install the new door so early? I mean, many tradespeople will still be coming in and out, and apart from the shell, nothing else is completed yet. So my question is whether it’s common to have a front door installed this early. I have also often seen that only the frame for the front door is installed first, and the door itself is temporarily fitted with a construction door panel.

How was it for you?

Yes, unfortunately, but I don’t think I’ll have another option. It’s at least good that I don’t have to have the correct door leaf installed right away.

We have an appointment with our door supplier on Tuesday, so I can bring it up again then. Thanks to you all.

Correct. The frame must be installed during the shell construction phase. Usually, a temporary construction door is provided by the builder or window manufacturer. If you have your own front door, you will also need a separate construction door. Otherwise, the actual door must be installed at this stage, and no one will take responsibility if it gets damaged, unless you stay there all day watching who causes any dents (video recording is not allowed).

I would recommend asking your door manufacturer if you can rent a construction door for the building phase. The front door is typically installed at the very end, after the stairs and other interior work are completed.

Or simply buy a construction door on eBay Classifieds – I paid 60 euros, four OSB boards, some screws/dowels, and that was it...

Yes, that’s how I would do it too. However, you still won’t be able to prevent someone from hitting it – accidents can always happen, unfortunately.

That’s why front doors should always be well protected, especially when they are already installed! Fiber fleece and/or bubble wrap really don’t cost much.

However, you cannot wrap the entire frame around – nor the door itself – since it still needs to be closed.

Hello,
our front door (including the frame) was installed almost at the very end.
All other work was completed beforehand. After that, the plasterer finished plastering the recess. Then the tiler repaired the small missing section of screed and laid the remaining four tiles on it, and that was it. Before that, there was only a temporary construction door, which the window and front door supplier had installed free of charge.
This procedure is standard with our general contractor. => No damage, no problems for the tradespeople.
