Hello,

I have some old stair treads from an older house. At first, I thought it was beech wood, but after sanding it down, I’m no longer sure what type of wood it is. If it weren’t for the grain, I would even wonder if it is wood at all. When cutting, the sawdust is rather powdery.

Background: I want to make a cutting board for our new sink out of this material, so it shouldn’t be wood that might contain any toxins. The board will also be planed down about 1cm (0.4 inches) on both sides.

Can someone with experience tell me anything about this wood?

Thanks for your help

Great! Thank you all for the helpful answers!
We usually use the board for dry food products. Otherwise, we use a plastic cutting board.
Thanks again

? You can also buy them made of mahogany in the store.
Genuine mahogany is on the endangered species list and requires an export permit. It is also far too expensive just for simple boards. Most likely, any tropical hardwood is sold as mahogany.

True mahogany comes from the Americas and requires an export permit. Besides that, there are plenty of related species (“imitation” mahogany) from Africa.
But that doesn’t really matter.

A cutting board like that can easily cost around €100. And furniture is also “just” boards.

Yes. And in some cases, even over 100€.
That’s why I’m also considering making one myself, custom-made!
