Egon56Hello everyone, I have noticed that the door handles on my IKEA Kallax shelf sometimes become loose and eventually come off completely. Since I don’t want to keep tightening the handles or constantly adjust them, I’m wondering: What tricks or methods are there to securely and permanently attach the Kallax door handles so they don’t become loose again? I’m looking for long-term solutions that can be done easily, ideally without having to replace the handles entirely or needing special tools. Has anyone had experience with reinforcing the screw connection, retrofitting, or using additional aids like glue, seals, or washers? I’m looking forward to your suggestions!
I can totally understand how annoying it is when the handles keep coming loose. I had the same problem, especially with doors that are used frequently. What helped me was placing small rubber washers behind the screws and also using a medium-strength threadlocker. This ensures a secure hold, but you can still remove the handles later if needed. It might not be the most elegant solution, but it’s very effective. Have you checked if the screws or the threads are already damaged? That could also be the cause of the loosening.
A precise method to address the issue of loose Kallax door handles is to use a combination of a threadlocker and a washer, which helps distribute the pressure more evenly. Important: Use a medium-strength threadlocker, such as Loctite 243, so that disassembly remains possible if needed later. Additionally, I recommend checking the threads before reattaching the screws. If you notice any signs of damaged or frayed threads, a thread repair kit would be advisable. Alternatively, in such cases, the hole can be repaired using some wood glue and wood shavings. This approach significantly extends the lifespan of the fastening. A solution relying solely on adhesive without mechanical fixation is not durable enough.

At first, I was unsure if a thread locker would cause the screws to become too tight when replacing them, but as Rodolfo says, using a medium-strength thread locker works perfectly.I’m also curious: The screws used for the Kallax door handles are sometimes quite thin. Has anyone tried installing larger screws to achieve greater stability, or is the risk of damage too high?
I would approach the idea of using larger screws with caution. Basically, if the original holes are enlarged, the durability of the material around the hole may be compromised. Additionally, the specific MDF or particleboard used in Kallax shelves is often a weak point.
A more durable alternative is to use stronger wall plugs instead of larger screws and fill these holes with reinforced wood glue if the original threads have worn out. Relying on threadlocker alone is often not enough with heavy use since the material can give way.
If anyone is interested in the technique, the handles could be replaced with short threaded bolts that are fastened from the inside. This spreads the load over a larger area.
