Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet and now face the challenge of aligning the cabinet doors precisely. There are often small misalignments, door edges are not completely flush, or the doors don’t close evenly—especially when several doors are side by side. Are there any proven tips or reliable methods to position the doors as accurately and permanently as possible? I am particularly interested in mechanical adjustment options on the IKEA Metod hinge fittings, tools to assist with alignment, or specific steps that make the process easier. I want very small gaps and uniform spacing, which is possible with the Metod series thanks to its modular design but not straightforward. Thanks for your advice!

Great question! I love it when everything fits perfectly – especially with the Metod range, where you can really get great results! Here are my top tips:

- Make sure to use the three adjustment axes on the IKEA hinges (height, side, depth). This way, you can fine-tune the door alignment with precision!
- Always start by roughly aligning, then make small incremental adjustments. Patience is key!
- Important: Always fully assemble the hinges first, then hang the doors; otherwise, fine adjustment won’t be possible.

Give it a try—turn the small adjustment wheels, check the gap sizes—it’s really satisfying when everything fits perfectly in the end! 😊

Adjust the door height using the top screw.
Adjust the lateral position using the side screw.
Adjust the door forward/backward position with the small screw on the hinge plate.
Therefore, always fully adjust all three screws.

Correct alignment of the Ikea Metod cabinet doors relies on the precise adjustment of the three main axes on the original hinges:

- Vertical adjustment: The large screw at the top allows fine-tuning of the door height. This is essential to align the top edge flush with adjacent cabinets.
- Horizontal adjustment: The screw located on the side is used to align the door horizontally to ensure even gaps.
- Depth adjustment (front/back): The small screw in the hinge mounting plate controls the distance between the door front and the cabinet frame.

It is recommended to hang all doors partially at first, align them exactly, and then gradually tighten the screws. If a door still does not close flush, minor corrections using plastic or felt pads at contact points can help. Also, make sure the hinges and cabinet side are mounted securely and stably.

In addition to properly adjusting the screws, I recommend checking the level of the entire cabinet carcass. If the carcass is not perfectly flat or is slightly tilted, all adjustments on the doors will have limited effect.

The level can usually be corrected using simple plastic feet or shims. After leveling the base, check whether the doors stick or bind under pressure when closing. Sometimes a slight readjustment of the screws helps, especially if tested step by step while the cabinet is installed.

Another tip: Metod hinges are precise, but if they feel stiff or difficult to operate, it’s best to disassemble them again and check for dirt or incorrectly installed parts.

If the doors rub against each other or the cabinet body despite correct alignment, it can help to slightly loosen the hinge screws and gently adjust the doors before tightening everything again. This prevents stress and warping.

A common beginner mistake is tightening all the screws fully before the doors fit properly. I also recommend applying a drop of lubricant oil to the hinge joints before installation; this makes the movement smoother and helps compensate for minor fitting irregularities.

Patience is absolutely necessary when adjusting the Metod doors – it’s better to make several small adjustments than to turn too aggressively.
