Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion on the following topic: What tools are needed for repairs on Ikea Hemnes furniture?
Specifically, I’m interested in which hand tools are really useful when, for example, you want to fix a drawer that has come loose or reinforce damaged joints. Ikea often uses certain wooden dowels, screws, and simple fittings, so I’m wondering whether a cordless drill is necessary, what types of screwdrivers might be required, or if any special tools for wood repair are needed – or if standard tools are sufficient.
I would appreciate any experiences or tips regarding good tools for the Hemnes series.

I would like to explain this in more detail: Hemnes furniture is usually made of solid wood with additional fasteners such as minifix connectors or wood screws. To carry out repairs properly, I recommend:
- A cordless drill with torque control to prevent over-tightening
- Phillips and slotted screwdrivers depending on the screw type, preferably with ergonomic handles
- Wood glue for loose joints to restore stability
- A small hammer or rubber mallet for dowels or wooden parts
- Optionally, a wood filler and sandpaper in case minor repairs to the wood are necessary
Important: Check the type of screws and fittings in your furniture beforehand. Hemnes often uses specific screws that standard tools can fit, but the cordless drill makes the work much easier.

Hello,
I’d like to support the previous answers and add that, depending on the repair, a set of hex keys (Allen wrenches) can be very useful. Some Hemnes parts, especially the connector fittings, sometimes require an internal hex key.
This advice is very important, as Hemnes often uses wood and chipboard screws that can be handled well with common tools, but also special fittings that are clearly described in the instructions.
If wood glue treatment becomes necessary, you should plan this calmly in advance to ensure the stability holds. Good preparation is always very helpful with Hemnes.

I think the topic of Ikea Hemnes tools is often too focused on cordless drills – they are overrated.
A Phillips screwdriver is certainly enough, but what about nails, wall plugs, or wood glue? Is that really that important? In my opinion, too much technology is involved here, where ultimately a simple screwdriver and some basic craftsmanship get the job done.
Just because something is new and made with plastic fittings doesn’t mean you need to rely on high-tech tools. A screwdriver and a tape measure – that’s it.
