Hello everyone, I have installed several IKEA Platsa units on the wall and have noticed a slight wobbling, especially when the shelves are loaded. My question is how to effectively and permanently eliminate this wobbling? I have checked the basic setup; the units are properly assembled and attached using the IKEA mounting brackets, which I consider stable. However, I still feel a bit of movement, particularly at the corner joints. Does anyone have experience with tips or tricks to secure wobbly Platsa units against swaying or rocking? Thank you in advance for any advice! Which additional measures provide the most stability?

Using additional back panels on the shelving units significantly increases stability.

I find that interesting. My Platsa units actually have IKEA’s thin standard back panels. Does it make sense to replace them with thicker OSB or MDF boards as back panels? Or are there any practical guides for such modifications that can improve stability without much effort?

Yes, replacing or adding to the original back panel with a 6-8 mm (1/4–5/16 inch) OSB or MDF board significantly increases the lateral and torsional stiffness of the structure. The board should be flush with the edges and secured with several screws or fasteners. This also prevents wobbling over time. However, the effort involved and the appearance will differ somewhat from the original.

Are there any recommendations on how to better monitor the actual load limits in everyday use?

A realistic assessment is based on avoiding overloading individual compartments and considering the weight of the structure plus the payload. For example, shelves are often limited to around 15 kg (33 lbs). Exceeding this limit can cause sagging and lead to an unstable overall construction.

My experience is: it’s better to distribute the total weight more evenly and check more frequently than to risk having too much. Investing in additional wall anchors is worthwhile and reassuring – it feels really good when everything stands solid and secure!

Thank you very much for all the helpful tips so far! I will definitely install the angle brackets on the inside and check whether the back panels can be replaced with more robust options. I will also take to heart the advice about even load distribution and controlled stress. Does anyone have proven tips for retightening screws over time? I have noticed that, despite everything, they tend to loosen again over time.

Tighten thoroughly every 6 months, this helps. Additionally, it is recommended to secure screws with some threadlocker or adhesive to prevent them from loosening easily.
