Hello everyone,

A few months ago, I bought a Hemnes bed from IKEA. Unfortunately, it has recently started squeaking quite annoyingly with every movement in the bedroom. The noises seem to occur mainly at the joints between the wooden parts. I have already tried tightening the screws with an Allen key, but this only helped temporarily.

My question is: What specific steps can be taken to permanently eliminate this squeaking? Which materials are best suited to reduce friction between the wooden parts without compromising stability? Are there any special products or techniques recommended by IKEA or experienced users?

I look forward to precise tips, including advice on common weak points of the Hemnes series. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

first, check that all screws and connections are properly tightened. Often, the cause is that some connections have loosened slightly.

Then you can rub some wax or paraffin on the areas where wood meets wood. This reduces friction and can significantly reduce squeaking.

Hello KOLENON,

since you have already described the problem well, I would like to add a few points: the squeaking usually occurs due to friction between the wooden parts or between wood and metal connectors. As you have already done correctly, all screws should be tightened securely.

What you could also try is applying silicone spray or graphite powder to the connection points. These lubricants are odorless and do not damage the wood.

If that does not help, you can also use felt pads or small plastic strips to separate the direct contact surfaces. It is important that you do not use anything that causes pressure marks, as this could lead to warping.

Good luck!

Thanks! Wax sounds interesting. Do you mean real beeswax or more like a special furniture wax cloth? Can you also use a regular candle piece for that?

The idea of felt pads is new to me. Are those then glued under the wooden boards? Or better only at certain contact points? I’d prefer not to make any permanent changes with glue, since I might want to return the furniture.

Regarding the issue: Hemnes furniture is made from solid pine wood, which naturally expands and contracts in response to changes in humidity. This can cause tension that leads to squeaking.

For the solution:
- Regularly retighten screws as the wood moves and can loosen over time.
- Paraffin-based waxes or silicone spray are suitable for lubrication.
- For wood-on-wood contact points, very thin felt or foam rubber strips can help reduce mechanical friction. These should be applied with adhesives that leave minimal residue, such as removable mounting adhesives.

Note: Avoid using oil-based products like machine oil, as these can cause the wood to swell and may result in damage.

I can relate to how annoying such squeaking can be. I had a similar issue with a Hemnes shelf that kept squeaking constantly, to the point where I sometimes thought I wouldn’t be able to sleep peacefully anymore.

What helped in my case was regularly tightening the joints, but especially consciously changing the humidity levels in the room. I used a humidifier because the wood tends to expand and contract quite a bit when the air is too dry.

Maybe it will help you, in addition to the mechanical measures, to adjust the room environment a bit.

It’s truly amazing how much of a living material wood is and how much patience it can require from us...
