ᐅ What to do if Billy shelves are installed crooked?

Hello everyone, I recently assembled a few Billy shelves from Ikea, but unfortunately, they are noticeably crooked. The shelves are not level, which is especially apparent when stacking books and binders. I have already checked whether the floor is uneven, but I can largely rule that out. My question is: What practical and preferably long-lasting solutions are there to straighten crookedly installed Billy shelves? I am particularly interested in how to proceed without having to completely disassemble or damage the shelf. Are there any tips for simple adjustments to the shelf feet or the wall mounting that can help level the shelf? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

If the floor is uneven, you can also switch to adjustable furniture feet, which are available at hardware stores.

I hadn't considered adjustable furniture or shelf feet before. Do you have to disassemble the Billy shelf for that, or can the feet be replaced without much effort? The advantage sounds good, as it allows for individual leveling at the base.

Regarding wall fixings: use stronger anchors and screws if the originals feel too unstable.

Are there any recommendations for the best type of anchors (nylon, metal, etc.) to use with Billy shelves, especially when drilling into drywall?

Regarding the feet: Billy shelves usually have plastic feet that are screwed in. To install adjustable furniture feet, you need to unscrew the original feet and then mount the new ones accordingly – this is not complicated but requires the correct threaded adapter or new screws.

For drywall, it is always advisable to use specialized cavity anchors or toggle bolts that distribute the weight well. Nylon or metal cavity anchors are ideal for this purpose. Make sure the anchor size matches the screw and can safely support the weight of the shelf.

Mounting the shelf to the wall reinforces it against wall movements and prevents tipping. Optimizing the wall fastening will make the shelf overall more stable and level.

Exactly, just unscrew them and fit new adjustable feet – done. This is the best way to compensate for uneven floors and to level the shelf securely.
