Hello everyone,
I have owned a Malm bed from IKEA for some time now, with the headboard positioned directly against the wall. Recently, the headboard has started squeaking whenever I lean on it or move in bed. The noise is quite annoying and clearly comes from the headboard; I suspect it is caused by friction or a loose connection.
My question is: What effective measures can be taken to stop the squeaking on the Malm headboard without having to completely disassemble the bed? Has anyone experienced this issue, knows possible causes, and can recommend suitable solutions? It is important to me that the fix is sustainable and requires minimal effort.
I look forward to your tips and advice!

Squeaking in a Malm headboard usually has two main causes: either the connecting screws loosen over time, or friction occurs between the wood or particle boards.
First, I recommend systematically checking all screws and fasteners on the headboard and bed frame and tightening them if needed. IKEA often uses Phillips screws, which can loosen with movement.
If this is not enough, small felt or foam strips at the contact points between the headboard and the wall or at the connection to the slatted frame may help reduce friction noises.
Regarding disassembly: it is usually not necessary to take the entire bed apart when you specifically check the affected connections.

I’m familiar with the issue of the Malm headboard squeaking—it can be really annoying, especially when you want peace and quiet in the evening. What helped me was carefully tightening the screws, but even more important was loosening the bed a bit from the wall and realigning it.
Sometimes the frame suffers from uneven stress, and if the bed isn’t perfectly level, tensions build up that cause the creaking noise.
So, don’t just check the screws; also make sure the bed is standing straight and doesn’t wobble. Doing this significantly reduced the noise for me.
I know this isn’t always the easiest fix, but I’ve learned to pay close attention to small adjustments in the bed’s placement.

to slightly move the bed away from the wall and realign itThat’s brilliant! 🙂 I once had a creaking headboard on my bed, and simply shifting it a few centimeters (inches) fixed the problem completely.
I would also recommend sprinkling a little baby powder or talcum powder on the contact points. That worked very well for me to reduce the friction noise. Just give it a try—it's a simple and quick trick!
Good luck, this should be an easy fix!
The issue with squeaking in the Malm headboard can be analyzed quite well from a technical perspective. Before starting any measures, the exact cause should be identified.
Step 1: Check which parts are actually moving – is it the connection between the headboard and the side panels, or between the headboard and the wall?
Step 2: Completely loosen the screws and retighten them in two stages using a torque wrench (a zigzag pattern is recommended) to distribute the tension evenly.
Step 3: If wood is rubbing against wood, thin plastic or felt pads can be applied to reduce mechanical friction and prevent wear.
Step 4: Small irregularities can cause noise where the headboard contacts the wall. A narrow foam strip or a strip of self-adhesive felt can help here.
Could you describe how the headboard is installed on the bed and whether you have noticed any specific screws that are loose? That would make the advice even more precise.

Regarding the installation: The Malm headboard is attached here with four screws directly to the back of the bed base, with the nuts positioned on the inside. This evening, I was able to feel that at least two of these screws might have slight play, but nothing seems truly loose.
The headboard touches the wall along the top edge and does not stand away from it. The bed itself is fairly level, though there is a slight unevenness in the wall.
I will try the steps you suggested, especially systematically tightening the screws and adding felt strips to the wall. I’ll let you know if I have any further questions.
