ᐅ What should you do if the back panel adhesive on a KALLAX unit comes loose?

Hello everyone,

I noticed that the adhesive holding the back panel of my IKEA KALLAX shelf has come loose in several places. The back panel is no longer firmly attached and seems like it might come off completely over time. My question is: What are the best options when the adhesive on the back panel of a KALLAX shelf starts to fail? Are there suitable glues or repair methods that provide a durable and clean result? I want to prevent the back panel from falling off entirely and compromising the shelf’s stability. If anyone has experience with re-gluing, replacement, or other repairs, I would appreciate a detailed description of the steps and any tips. Thank you in advance!

I would like to add that the type of back panel itself also plays a role. In some KALLAX models, the back panel is very thin and is only held in place by the frame construction. In such cases, applying too much adhesive can actually change the tension and cause warping.

Therefore, I recommend carefully checking before re-gluing whether the back panel is only meant to be held in place or if it should also improve stability. In the latter case, mechanical fixing, as suggested, is definitely advisable.

Additionally, it can be helpful to lightly sand the back panel before gluing to improve adhesion. Important: clean the surfaces from dust and grease.

It’s great to see so many tips coming together here! :-)

Last year, I fixed my back panel using a multi-purpose construction adhesive—simply applied it generously, pressed it firmly, and then weighed it down with heavy books. After 24 hours, everything was rock solid!

A small tip: dampen the back panel slightly before gluing to prevent the material from absorbing too much adhesive. This helps it hold even better.

Good luck, you’ll manage it! 🙂

Who would have thought that the back panel of the KALLAX could be such an issue? 😄

To be honest, I also ignored it at first until it started to become loose. I simply reinforced it with wood glue and held it in place with tape until it dried. It worked perfectly—no complicated special products needed, and the back panel was storm-proof again.

If you want to do it really professionally, a little patience and the right timing for pressing it in place is often enough.

Good luck, and someday your shelf will be sturdier than new! 😉

In summary, I recommend the following approach as sustainable and efficient:

1. Carefully remove the back panel to avoid damaging surrounding areas.
2. Completely remove any old adhesive residues, possibly using fine sandpaper.
3. Clean and degrease the surface.
4. Apply a thin, even layer of high-quality assembly or wood glue.
5. Position the back panel precisely and press it firmly using weights or clamps.
6. Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours, preferably longer.
7. Optionally, secure with finishing nails if the back panel will be heavily stressed.

The combination of adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening significantly increases stability and durability.

I would avoid using superglue, as it tends to be brittle and does not provide a lasting bond with thin materials.
