Hello everyone,
For some time now, I’ve had the problem that the drawers in my IKEA Pax system no longer slide smoothly. Often, they feel stiff and sometimes even catch slightly, making opening and closing quite annoying. I have the impression that the issue might be related either to the drawer slides or to worn-out hardware.
Does anyone have tips or experience on how to effectively fix this problem? Are there any specific maintenance steps or replacement parts I should consider? I would like to avoid having to remove the entire drawer or even buying new ones.
Thanks for your help!

Hey,
great that you’re addressing the issue early! 😊 I also recommend checking if the drawers are properly aligned – sometimes they stick because they’re not running perfectly straight. A small tip: when cleaning, use a brush to clean the slides; this often works better in the corners. And if the movement is still a bit stiff, it can usually be fixed quickly with a little care!

Hello,
to systematically address the issue, I would suggest going through the following steps:
- First, completely pull the drawer out of the frame, carefully pulling both sides simultaneously to relieve tension on the slides.
- Thoroughly inspect the rollers and the slide tracks: Are the rollers damaged, flattened, or lacking lubrication?
- Cleaning the tracks is best done with an appropriate brush, followed by removing dust and lint with compressed air if available.
- For lubrication, I recommend using silicone spray because it does not stick and does not promote dust buildup. Mineral oils are not recommended!
Could you please also specify whether your drawers run on metal slides with plastic rollers or on full-extension ball bearing slides? This will help with a more precise diagnosis.

Hello,
I have found the following multi-step approach helpful for similar issues:
- Step 1: Pull out the drawer and check if the runners are properly anchored and not bent.
- Step 2: Clean with a slightly damp cloth (only if there is visible dirt, then wipe dry).
- Step 3: Check the rollers – are they loose? If so, gently tighten or replace them.
- Step 4: Apply silicone spray and then open and close the drawer fully several times to distribute the lubricant.
Important: Never use oil, as it attracts dust and worsens the problem over time.
If this does not help, it’s worth checking the installation situation to see if the drawer might have gotten wet or if the wooden panel has warped. This occasionally happens with Pax.

Additional notes:
- Check if the screws on the sliding rails are loose. These can cause mechanical binding.
- Make sure no foreign objects, such as small stones or fibers, are trapped in the rails.
- For older drawer models, replacing the plastic glides may help if they are warped or worn.
- Avoid oil-based lubricants, as they increase dust accumulation and consequently dirty the track.
Regular maintenance significantly extends the service life and preserves the functionality of the system.
