I have a question regarding the IKEA Malm chest of drawers, specifically about the drawer stops. Recently, the small plastic or metal stops that limit the drawer’s extension or prevent it from being completely pulled out broke on two of my drawers. This is frustrating because the drawer now either gets stuck or falls out completely.
My question is: What options are there to repair or replace these drawer stops (or extension limiters)? Can replacement parts be ordered from IKEA, or are there alternative solutions to make the system functional and safe again?
It would also be important for me to know the best professional way to repair this so that it remains stable and the drawer isn’t damaged.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello,
You can request replacement parts for the MALM drawer hooks directly from IKEA; they often send them free of charge or for a small fee. If they are not available, you can buy small metal or plastic hooks at hardware stores and install them yourself. The important thing is that the size fits.

Marlenepa2 Jan 2022 09:15Hello Eckhard55,
First of all: such drawer hooks are indeed often a weak point in MALM dressers, as they are heavily stressed by frequently pulling out the drawer.
If you want original replacements, you can either ask IKEA in person if they have spare parts for your dresser. Usually, their customer service is very helpful. If the hooks are no longer available,

you can also try to make something yourself with small screw hooks or plastic strips from a hardware store. It is important that the attachment is stable and durable.
I would recommend imitating the original fastening during the repair and avoiding blocking the drawer slide too much to prevent damage to the drawer mechanism.
If you like, I can also write you a step-by-step guide on how to make this yourself.

Hello Eckhard55,
to help you solve the problem with the broken drawer hooks on the MALM dresser, here is a simple step-by-step guide:
1. First, check if the hooks are completely broken or just loose. Sometimes they can be pressed back into place or secured with a drop of super glue.
2. If they are broken, contact IKEA customer service (online or in-store). It’s best to provide the model number and purchase date; they often send replacement parts free of charge.
3. If no replacement parts are available, you can install your own plastic or metal hooks about 2–3 cm (1–1.2 inches) long with a closed shape. These should be fixed with screws or strong adhesive tape to prevent the drawer from slipping out.
4. When installing, make sure the drawer slides remain fully operational and do not become stuck. There should also be no unnecessary pressure on the drawer runners.
Summary: Request original parts, or create an alternative solution with hardware store hooks, ensuring secure attachment.
Tip: Also check classified ad sites like eBay Kleinanzeigen, where individual replacement parts are often offered.
If you want, I’m happy to help with sourcing the parts or give advice on the tools needed.

From a practical perspective, the drawer hooks in the MALM series are designed as simple supports that are not intended for heavy loads or frequent stress. The material (often plastic) tends to degrade over time due to material fatigue.
If replacement parts are not available, I recommend the following pragmatic solution:
- Use small metal hooks with screw fasteners instead of plastic ones
- Mount them as close as possible to the original position to correctly maintain the drawer stop function
- Ensure that the hook does not obstruct the guide rail
This approach provides longer durability without compromising functionality.
For installation, a small screwdriver, possibly wall anchors for wood, and a tape measure are needed.
