Hello everyone, I have an issue with one of the doors on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet. When opening and closing, it rubs or scrapes. The door is not new, but it’s also not very old, and the rubbing always occurs in the lower area, probably near the hinge side or the bottom edge. The doors are installed correctly, but I suspect either the alignment isn’t optimal or something has warped slightly. I have already tried adjusting the hinges, but the scraping noise remains. Has anyone had experience with how to permanently eliminate this kind of rubbing? Are there any tips for fine adjustment or maybe small repair tricks that can be done without much effort? I would appreciate any help, as I don’t want to apply more force to close the door – that can’t be the solution.

To systematically address the issue of rubbing IKEA Metod doors, I recommend a structured approach.

- Step 1: Check on a level surface whether the cabinet carcass is standing straight (use a spirit level).
- Step 2: Remove the door and inspect whether it is flat, warped, or twisted.
- Step 3: Check the hinges for correct installation and any damage.
- Step 4: Adjust the door using the adjustment mechanism to align it optimally in three dimensions.
- Step 5: If necessary, place small spacers or felt pads at problematic contact points.

The causes of rubbing are usually incorrect adjustment or minor deformations of the carcass or door. It is important to consider mechanical modifications, such as sanding the door, only as a last resort to ensure lasting stability and appearance.

The Metod system hinges allow for quite precise adjustment, and most of the time the issue is due to incorrect settings.

I completely agree! Especially the second screw on the hinge (the horizontal one) often makes the difference. Just try a bit and don’t get discouraged—it’s definitely worth it! And if you notice the door sticking, simply pull out the retaining pin slightly and reposition the door a little.

Great people, great tips here! 🙂 I had a similar problem once. For me, lubricating the hinges a bit helped – they move more smoothly and fit better. Then adjust them carefully – and voilà, no more rubbing! Don’t forget to tighten them occasionally, as the Metod hinges tend to loosen over time.

The best approach is always:

- Carefully check the hinges to ensure all screws are tightened securely.
- Use vertical, horizontal, and depth adjustments.
- Verify that the cabinet body is level and free from any distortions.
- Numbered adjustment hooks on Metod cabinets support proper alignment.

If sanding is still necessary despite all adjustments, a very fine sanding or polishing of the door edge may be appropriate, but only after all adjustment options have been fully utilized.

Thank you very much for the detailed and helpful answers! I will start adjusting this evening and make sure to carefully set all three axes. The tip about the base surface was also very useful – I will keep a spirit level ready. If there is still rubbing afterwards, I will carefully use fine sandpaper and possibly oil the hinges to improve their movement.

One more question for the experts: Is there a recommendation for how much adjustment tolerance to allow on the Metod doors to avoid compromising stability? I would prefer not to make too many changes and risk affecting stability. Thanks in advance!
