Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe: it does not stand level and gives way slightly when touched, or rather it has a slight wobble, which feels unstable. It seems that one or more of the four legs do not sit properly on the floor, or the material might be warping. Despite carefully following the assembly instructions multiple times and retightening all the screws, the problem has not improved.

I’m particularly interested in what methods you use to fix this: Do you need to use special shims, furniture glides, or other leveling elements? What is the best approach for uneven floors? And are there long-term solutions to permanently prevent this give or wobble?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Do you have any experience with whether it can be counterproductive to firmly fix small wooden dowels or pads under the legs?

Rigid supports are generally risky if the floor expands or the wood moves. Flexible materials with low abrasion are preferable. If using rigid supports, I recommend carefully checking for size differences and avoiding over-tightening to prevent stress points.

If you choose pads, it is better to use materials with a slightly elastic surface suitable for furniture.

I have read your recent posts carefully. It reassures me that many of you have similar experiences. For me, it was also frustrating at times until I realized that not only the piece of furniture but also the floor and surrounding factors play a role.

My advice to everyone: If you feel that the furniture might be causing you stress, take your time and pay attention to your comfort zone. Sometimes, talking with others can also be helpful to find new solutions.

All the best – a sturdy wardrobe really brings calm to the home.

One final note: If the wobbling persists despite all measures, take a closer look at the type of flooring. Especially with old wooden floors or floorboards, uneven height differences can occur. In such cases, placing a sturdy base made of plywood or MDF under the piece of furniture can help. This base can serve as a foundation in the worst case, preventing any tipping entirely.

Although this slightly increases the overall height, it ultimately provides a more stable feel. If anyone has further questions about this, I am happy to assist.
