Hello everyone,

I’ve been having an issue with my Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers for some time now. Some of the drawers stick or can only be pulled out with noticeable resistance. This mostly affects the lower drawers, which feel quite stiff to open.

I have already checked for any foreign objects or dirt in the drawer slides, but there is nothing unusual to be seen. The drawers are properly aligned, and at first glance, the slides seem to be in good condition.

I’m mainly interested in the possible causes for Hemnes drawers that no longer slide smoothly. I’m also looking for proven methods or tips to restore quiet and smooth operation without having to remove the entire drawer or replace parts.

Do you have any experience with this issue or special tricks that have worked well for you? Thanks in advance for your support!

A brief update from my side:

I removed the drawers and thoroughly cleaned all the runners, also following the tip to use a brush and dry cloth. In addition, I started inspecting the floor slab. In fact, I noticed a slight warp on the lower drawer that I had not seen before.

This warp apparently caused increased resistance on one side, which explains the sticking. I adjusted the panels slightly and gently reduced the warp with a wooden mallet, taking care not to damage the material.

I also applied a small amount of silicone spray sparingly on the runners. The result: the drawers now operate noticeably smoother and much easier.

Many thanks for the previous recommendations – the detailed advice was very helpful!

Additionally, I would like to add:

It often helps to gently push the drawers in slightly when installing them and then slowly pull them out. This improves the positioning of the plastic rollers in the tracks. Also, pay attention to an even clearance along the edges.

If problems persist, check the fittings of the front panel as well. Sometimes screws loosen slightly, causing tension that affects the drawer movement.

Furthermore, I recommend not fully loading more than one drawer at the same time, as this can overload the sliding mechanism.

If the drawer is sticking, you can:

- Clean the drawer slides
- Use silicone spray
- Check if the drawer is properly aligned
- Reduce the load

If none of this helps, consider replacing the rollers.

I will check the bottom panels for warping. Do you have any tips on how to detect this as precisely as possible?

For an accurate inspection of the bottom, you can use a straight edge (e.g., a metal ruler): place it lengthwise and crosswise on the drawer bottom to see if there is any gap between the ruler and the wood. If needed, careful sanding or targeted adjustment of the drawer can help ensure even load distribution.

If the drawer sits crooked in any way, it will stick.

That’s exactly the key point. Marks from material tension caused by incorrect alignment often lead to sticking.

My recommendation: systematically check all points – runners, rollers, bottom panel, front attachment, overload. Only this way can the problem be resolved permanently.
