Hello everyone,
I’m currently facing a somewhat annoying issue while assembling my new Ikea Brimnes wardrobe: some of the included screws don’t seem to fit. More precisely, they don’t fit into the designated drill holes or screw connections described in the Ikea instructions. I’ve double-checked several times to make sure I’m using the correct parts, but it just doesn’t work.
My question to you:
What are your experiences or tips when Ikea Brimnes screws don’t fit? Are there any known issues with the accuracy of the screws? Or would it be better to try getting replacement screws from a hardware store? Maybe someone here uses special tools or tricks with Brimnes furniture to avoid such problems?
I want to assemble the wardrobe as securely and correctly as possible without damaging the original parts. Any advice on handling the screws properly, recommended sizes, or similar information would also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for your support!

If screws don’t fit, first check if it’s really the correct screw for that spot. That’s a good starting point, but with the Ikea Brimnes series, a more precise approach is actually worthwhile.
Ikea often uses a combination of special metal connectors and cam locks, along with different types of screws that vary in length, thread type, and head shape. Often, the screws included look very similar but have slight differences in size. This can result in a screw not fitting into the pre-drilled hole. It’s therefore worth checking the screws systematically for length and diameter using a caliper or at least a measuring gauge.
Another important point: the holes themselves should not be too tight due to manufacturing tolerances – if they are, the holes can be carefully widened with an appropriate file or a spiral drill bit. But please proceed cautiously to avoid compromising stability.
For emergencies:
- Check screws for exact measurements
- Inspect holes and carefully modify if necessary
- Look for replacement screws: 5mm (0.2 inch) wood screws of the correct length usually work well
One last note: if the screws are simply too thick, never force them in with brute strength, as this can tear the material. Better to check carefully and make adjustments as needed.

Ikea often uses a combination of special metal connectors, so-called cam locks, and various types of screws in the Brimnes seriesExactly, that’s important. I have assembled the Brimnes several times and once encountered a screw that didn’t fit. In such cases, I recommend going through the instructions carefully step by step and sorting the screws by count and type.
Sometimes slight turning attempts help, but never use force.
However, if the screw is really too thick or too long, I have had good experiences buying a screw with the same thread and appropriate length at a hardware store. It’s worth preparing the screw with a thread tap if needed.
In conclusion: Although Ikea production is very standardized, manufacturing tolerances can still occur.
If you want, I can also help you identify the exact screw type—just let me know.
