Hello everyone,

I am currently facing an issue while assembling my IKEA BESTÅ cabinet. During the assembly, the panel or frame keeps rotating a bit further, causing the fronts not to align flush and the entire unit to feel unstable. This rotation happens repeatedly despite carefully tightening the screws, and I suspect that either an incorrect assembly sequence or a small installation error is the cause.

Has anyone experienced this problem or can explain what might be causing it and how to fix it permanently? I am especially interested in approaches to make the construction stable enough so that it doesn’t keep shifting. Thanks in advance!

I know this problem well. It is important to initially tighten all connections by hand. Then align the individual components and only after that fully tighten them. This prevents the panels from twisting.

Also, check that all dowels are properly seated.

Hello,

I would like to add some points to systematically address the issue of twisting:

- Step 1: Check that all drill holes and dowel holes fit correctly and are undamaged. A misaligned hole can already be the cause.
- Step 2: Assemble the base panel and side walls first, without the front panels, but do not fully tighten the screws yet.
- Step 3: Use a protractor or a spirit level to verify that the sides form perfect 90-degree angles with each other.
- Step 4: Then tighten the screws in the center first, not the outer ones.
- Step 5: Finally, install the front and back panels and check once more that nothing is twisted.

A common mistake is tightening the screws on the back panel too early, which can encourage three-dimensional twisting. If you like, I can point out the typical problem areas I often see with Bestå.

That sounds very reasonable and also seems logical to me.
My biggest concern right now is that the entire unit might twist or warp in such a way that the springs in the connecting elements (those small plastic or metal parts that hold the pieces together) no longer engage properly. Do you have any tips on this?

I will definitely check that carefully again.

I’m using the metal connectors supplied by IKEA – some seem to affect stability if the distance to the carcass is not exact. Are there any recommendations on how much tolerance is acceptable?

Great thread! 😊

I had exactly the same problem last month with my BESTÅ! The important thing is to be patient – sometimes a cabinet needs time to “settle in.”

Here’s my tip: If the frame twists, you might not have tightened the plastic connectors enough or the screws on the side panels evenly. Imagine the cabinet telling you, “Just let me stand still and arrange myself properly!” 😉

In the end, I loosened all the screws, realigned everything, and then slowly tightened them again from the inside out. After that, the unit was stable, and no door was crooked.

Keep at it, you’ll get there! 👍

This approach makes sense to prevent warping. Additionally, I recommend checking whether the surfaces where the panels rest are truly flat and free from manufacturing defects, as even small irregularities can worsen twisting issues.

It can also help to secure the fasteners with a small drop of assembly adhesive—this prevents screws from loosening under load but is only advisable if you do not plan to disassemble the cabinet later.

With IKEA BESTÅ, the clamping force of the metal connectors is generally limited since they are designed as a snap-fit system. Therefore, precise alignment and balanced tightening of all screws are crucial for stability.

If problems persist, it might be due to a defective component, which should be reported to IKEA customer service if necessary.
