Hello everyone,

I have noticed that the door hinges on my IKEA Billy bookcases regularly squeak when I open or close the doors. The issue occurs on several units and is quite annoying.

I suspect it is related to the metal parts of the hinges or their mounting, but I am unsure which method would be the most effective way to fix it.

Does anyone have experience with permanently and efficiently eliminating the squeaking on Billy cabinets? What lubricants or maintenance measures work best for this?

I would prefer not to buy complete replacement parts if there is a simple, cost-effective solution.

Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

Tighten the screws, remove the door, carefully treat the hinge with a suitable lubricant (silicone spray or PTFE spray), and open and close it several times.

This almost always eliminates the squeaking.

I recommend the following steps for a sustainable solution:

To add, and with durability in mind:

In addition to thorough cleaning, I recommend gently opening and closing the hinges slightly after applying lubricant, if possible, to help distribute the lubricant evenly to all contact points.

Also, the type of lubricant should be matched to the hinge material. Billy units use galvanized steel hinges, so Teflon- or PTFE-based sprays work perfectly. White lithium grease is also suitable, but it can be too thick for furniture hinges and is better used for door hinges on furniture subject to higher stress.

One more tip: if squeaking persists despite maintenance, a hinge might be damaged or bent. You can carefully check this visually to see if the movement is smooth or if the hinges face any unusual resistance.

Is your Billy shelf located in an area with high humidity? Moisture can promote rust, even on galvanized steel, which can increase squeaking.
