Hello everyone, I’ve had an ongoing issue with the drawers of my Malm chest of drawers squeaking whenever I pull them out or push them in. The noise is quite annoying, especially as it’s getting louder over time. I’ve been using the chest of drawers for several years and have cleaned it before, but the squeaking persists. Does anyone have good tips or proven methods to eliminate the drawer squeaking? What could be the causes, and what should I pay attention to when trying to fix it? Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions!

Also check whether the drawer is installed correctly. Sometimes the drawer gets stuck on the side and causes noise.

I can confirm that; I've experienced the same. A bit of adjustment can sometimes help, such as removing the drawer and making sure the slides are properly aligned.

Thank you for the previous tips; they have already helped me a lot. I wanted to ask additionally: What is the best way to remove the drawers to clean the runners? So far, I have only pulled the drawers out halfway, but I am not sure whether they should be fully removed or not. Are there any special precautions to take? And if so, how should I reinsert them to ensure proper alignment?

The Malm drawers are usually mounted on metal runners with an extension mechanism that includes a locking feature. When fully extended, a small lever or tab on the runner should be pressed or lifted to release the drawer completely from the runners. Removing the drawer allows for thorough cleaning and maintenance of the tracks. To reinsert the drawer, carefully place it into the runners, pressing straight and evenly until it clicks into place. Make sure the runners are not misaligned to prevent noise or jamming later on.

Fully pull out the drawer, release the lever on the rails, then remove it. Reinsert in reverse order until you feel it click into place.

In addition to drawer adjustment: Sometimes the plastic rollers on the drawer slides become worn or damaged, which can also cause squeaking noises. If this is the case, the rollers can usually be replaced individually without needing to buy a completely new slide. IKEA models are generally modular in design, and spare parts are available online.
