Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of transporting one or more IKEA Billy bookcases safely without causing scratches, dents, or other damage to the wooden panels or edges. Since Billy bookcases are usually delivered as flat-pack items and I want to transport them unpacked, I am especially interested in any practical tips and tricks you have collected to avoid damage during transport.

I mean both transport in a car or van as well as carrying and moving the bookcases inside the house or stairwell.

Who has experience with suitable packing materials or special precautions? How is the handling when transporting the bookcases assembled versus disassembled?

Looking forward to your tips and advice!

To prevent damage to the BILLY shelf during transport, be sure to protect it well with blankets or packing paper, especially the edges.

Additionally, I recommend transporting the shelf lying down to avoid any stress on the shelves.

A quick tip: If possible, transport the shelves separately from the back panel and pack all parts individually. This way, you avoid friction and scratches.

First of all, thank you for the clear question. To consider the topic in more detail, I will address several points:

1. Disassembly vs. Whole Shelf:
BILLY shelves can usually be disassembled without much effort, which significantly simplifies transportation. It is advisable to remove all shelves first and protect them separately, for example with bubble wrap or foam strips.

2. Edge and Surface Protection:
The large particleboard panels are very sensitive to impacts and moisture. Therefore, they should be wrapped with protective covers, ideally felt mats or thick blankets, to avoid pressure marks.

3. Transport Position:
It is recommended to transport the panels as upright as possible, for example secured with straps in a van. Transporting on a car roof should only be done if the surfaces are properly protected.

4. Fastening:
Loose parts should also be transported in separate boxes to prevent them from shifting.

I would be interested to know what type of vehicle you are using and how long the distance is. It is also relevant whether the shelf will be assembled immediately after transport or stored.

An additional tip from my experience: If you transport the shelf lying down, make sure it rests on a flat and preferably soft surface.

A leftover carpet piece or several moving blankets can prevent dust and small particles from scratching the surface.

And if you have left the shelves inside the unit, they should definitely be fixed in place or removed, as they could otherwise shift during transport and cause damage.

Hey, I always wrapped my BILLYs with blankets and added old sweaters or cardboard as padding in especially sensitive areas.

Small dents usually aren’t visible in everyday use, but I never wanted to take the risk, so I preferred to spend a bit more time on packing.

And very important: Always carry them with two people, that way you avoid accidental bumps against the wall 😉
