I recently started my IKEA Metod kitchen project, focusing especially on the countertops. Since I plan to use the kitchen long-term, I’m particularly interested in tips for the sustainable and low-maintenance care of IKEA Metod countertops.
I’m especially curious about how to prevent damage from moisture or heat, which cleaning methods are the gentlest, and whether there are recommended protective measures to keep the countertops looking good even after several years.
Additionally, it would be helpful to get advice on common weak points or mistakes during installation or use that can be avoided from the beginning.
I’m looking forward to your experiences, recommendations, and tips to help me maintain the durability and appearance of my countertops as best as possible.

Regarding your question about the edges: Mainly, it is moisture damage that makes the edges vulnerable. Mechanical stresses such as impacts or scratches can worsen the condition, of course, but they are less often the cause of deeper damage.
About sealing: I have had good experiences with water-based wood varnish, like the type you can find at hardware stores. It is important that it is suitable for kitchen surfaces or furniture and safe for health.
The follow-up treatment depends on usage; I recommend an annual inspection and reapplication if needed—especially in areas that are heavily used or where moisture can accumulate.
Look for discoloration, swollen spots, or cracks at joints and edges. These areas often indicate that moisture has penetrated. Also, if there are shifts or split joints, quick action is advisable.

How is the best way to perform such a visual inspection? Are there typical signs to watch out for?

To further clarify the visual inspection:
- Check the joints between the countertop and the wall for loose seals or cracks. Water can penetrate here and reach the chipboard.
- Edges should appear smooth and sealed, without black discoloration that could indicate mold.
If moisture has penetrated, this is often noticeable by slightly lifting the board or deformations. Such damage should be addressed immediately, as repairs become increasingly complex over time.
Regular maintenance and inspections significantly reduce the risk.

In my early experience, I often tried to remove stubborn stains with stronger products, which unfortunately caused the finish to become dull or start peeling.
Therefore, it is essential to use mild, non-abrasive cleaners and, if necessary, to soak stains with a damp cloth for a few minutes instead of scrubbing them dry.
Another good tip I heard from professionals: never use furniture polish or wax on the countertops. These often damage the surface more than they protect or smooth it.
