Hello everyone, I am planning to repaint some IKEA Hemnes furniture and am looking for proven tips and advice specifically for this furniture series. The Hemnes pieces are made of solid wood, usually have a lacquer or stain finish, and are relatively affordable. Still, I want to achieve a result that is as durable and attractive as possible. Are there any special preparation steps, such as sanding or priming, that should be considered? Which type of paint is best suited? I am also interested in how to avoid common problems like streaks, bubbles, or an uneven finish. I look forward to concrete and practical advice, preferably based on personal experience.

Sanding is essential I wonder if this is necessary for all Hemnes furniture, or if there are cases where you can simply clean the surface to preserve the original finish.
I’m also curious whether all acrylic paints adhere equally well or if there are quality differences that should be considered.

Between coats, the surface should be lightly sanded if needed (grit 320) and cleaned That sounds like a lot of work – is there any experience regarding how often this is really necessary, or if one or two thin coats are sufficient, especially for furniture that won’t be subject to heavy wear?
