Hello everyone, I recently bought some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series and would like to know about proven tips and methods for cleaning these pieces. Since most Hemnes items are made of solid wood or have a painted finish, I’m especially interested in the best way to clean them without damaging the wood surface or affecting the protective coating. Are there any specific cleaning products or home remedies that are recommended? How do you handle cleaning stains or stubborn dirt? Any advice on regular maintenance and cleaning intervals would also be very helpful. I definitely want to avoid the surfaces becoming dull or stained over time. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!
Hello nosar, your question is very well formulated and covers many important aspects. For cleaning IKEA HEMNES furniture made of solid pine, it is advisable to use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Please avoid aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive sponges, as these can damage the surface. Here are a few detailed tips:
- Regular dusting with a microfiber cloth helps remove fine dust and dirt without scratching the surface.
- For more stubborn dirt, a mild soapy solution works well (e.g., a few drops of dish soap in lukewarm water). Make sure the cloth is well wrung out and not too wet.
- After cleaning, immediately wipe the surface with a dry, clean cloth to prevent water marks or moisture damage.
- Avoid harsh or alcohol-based cleaners as well as scouring agents.
- For maintenance, occasional use of a specialized wood care product from a hardware store can help enhance the grain.
If stains occur, you can try using a rubber eraser or mild cleaning creams, but these should be tested carefully. It’s best to try first in an inconspicuous area. I hope this helps you!

In addition to the previous advice, I would like to point out the following:
- The HEMNES series is mainly made of solid pine wood and coated with a water-repellent lacquer, which can be damaged if exposed to excessive moisture.
- It is recommended to wipe up any spills immediately to prevent liquids from penetrating the wood.
- For stains caused by food, drinks, or similar sources, a solution of lukewarm water and vinegar (1:1) in small amounts can help; always dry thoroughly afterward.
- It is best to follow up wet cleaning by wiping with a dry cotton cloth to remove any moisture residue.
- For stubborn dirt, harsher solvents are not necessary; gentle rubbing with a soft cloth or sponge is sufficient.
This care routine protects both the lacquer coating and the wood from damage in the long term and preserves the appearance of the furniture.

I often fear that I might accidentally use too much moisture while cleaning and damage the lacquer. I find it helpful to always apply cleaning products to a cloth first and then work gently, instead of applying them directly onto the furniture.

For everyday care, I personally use a simple dry microfiber cloth and only dampen the furniture very sparingly when cleaning stains. For tougher dirt, I mix dish soap with water but always very carefully, using only a small amount of liquid.
The feeling of not making the wood too wet is really important. I’d be glad if anyone has more practical tips or advice on care products!
