Good morning everyone, I’m planning to get the Ikea Hemnes shelving unit and wanted to ask: What tips do you have for assembling this piece of furniture completely on your own? I have some DIY skills but no helper available, and the unit seems quite bulky and heavy. I’m also interested in efficient methods and tricks to handle unpacking the boxes, managing individual parts, and screwing everything together without risking mistakes afterwards. Which tools would you definitely recommend? I appreciate any practical advice!

Use a cordless drill with torque control to avoid over-tightening the screws. That’s a great tip, thank you! Alternatively, can I use a regular screwdriver if I don’t have a cordless drill? And how much force should I approximately apply to tighten the screws enough without overdoing it? I’m a bit concerned about stripping the screws since I don’t have experience with a cordless drill.
Who says you can’t assemble a Hemnes on your own? Sure, things go faster with two people, but with a bit of determination, two left hands are no obstacle. My tip: if you’re building it solo for the first time, start early and organize all parts carefully. Instead of trying to do everything at once, work in stages to keep frustration levels low. And honestly, who needs helpers when you’re in the zone? 😊

Who says you can’t assemble a HEMNES on your own sometimes? Absolutely. The key is to install the back panel last and to carefully align all parts along the way. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a crooked cabinet.A few tips regarding screws with or without a cordless screwdriver:
- A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque protects against applying too much force and preserves the material.
- When using only manual operation, make sure to position the screw perfectly and turn it with controlled force so that the thread engages properly in the hole before tightening further.
- If you notice the wood starting to split or the screw no longer turning, stop immediately.
- The best approach is to first insert the screw lightly, then tighten it fully.
- If needed, you can hold the screws using a screwdriver while turning to prevent them from slipping.
I hope this helps!
