Hello everyone, and especially @KlaRa

We are planning to install solid oak strip parquet in our new build. It will be glued down. Originally, we were thinking of using 15 mm (0.6 inch) thickness, but by chance, I found a manufacturer who also offers 10 mm (0.4 inch) thickness. This would naturally be worth considering from a cost perspective.

Is there anything that speaks against using the thinner option?
If relevant, we are building a timber frame house with underfloor heating and screed.

Thank you very much for your input!

Hello questioner.
Strip parquet is typically produced in thicknesses from 16mm to 24mm (0.6 to 1 inch).
Mosaic parquet, on the other hand, comes in the thickness you mentioned.
This means that when the parquet wood is glued to a screed, the thickness of the parquet itself is not relevant for its use.
It is just that with every parquet renovation—that is, material removal through sanding—the service life is reduced.
If you ask me: this is a negligible effect for an average user, unless they live in a historic villa with the requirement to maintain the property in its current condition for the next 200 to 300 years without having to completely remove the parquet floor due to insufficient thickness.
Seriously back to the point:
Even 10mm (0.4 inch) thick parquet has its justification.
Just make sure it is solid wood strips, not thin-layered elements on a substrate.
With each parquet renovation, you lose about 2mm (0.08 inch) of material. Depending on the type of use, a complete sanding and re-treatment will be needed every 8 to 10 years.
With a material thickness of 10mm (0.4 inch), you can therefore expect a service life of approximately 30 to 40 years.

Don’t forget that wood is a good insulator for your underfloor heating system. Solid wood insulates the heat coming from below much more effectively than 2- or 3-layer engineered wood flooring. For this reason, we chose a 2-layer engineered wood floor with a 6mm (0.24 inch) wear layer. Total thickness – 16mm (0.63 inch).

Thanks for the tip!
I can mostly find only 2-layer parquet with a wear layer of 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 inches).
Where did you get yours from?

Yes, those are the most common thicknesses.
We got the parquet from a Polish manufacturer called "Finish Parkiet." It is somewhat more expensive, but the quality is first class.
