Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I noticed that a few of my IKEA Billy shelves have been damaged by moisture. The shelves have swollen in areas where water has been standing for a while, and the edges already look somewhat frayed. Before investing a lot of money in new furniture, I would like to know what specific solutions or repair options are available for water-damaged Billy shelves.

Are there particular techniques or materials that have proven effective in restoring swollen shelves? Or is replacing the damaged parts unavoidable? By the way, the shelf is located in a relatively humid basement, so moisture damage is not unexpected.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

One more question from my side: Is the shelf placed directly on the floor?

Yes, the Billy shelf is currently placed directly on a concrete floor in the basement, which unfortunately is somewhat damp. I have not added any feet or other supports underneath it yet.

I’m curious: How extensive is the damage to your Billy shelf?

The damage can be seen on two shelves, with about half of the surface swollen, and the edges of the material are slightly frayed. Otherwise, the wood does not look heavily damaged on the outside, but when touched, it feels softer and less stable.

Thanks for the suggestions so far; I will first remove the shelves, let them dry thoroughly, and then try sanding with sandpaper.

If that doesn’t work, I will look into replacement options at IKEA or a hardware store.

Hello sandro31,

Regarding the situation you described, I would like to explain in more detail the typical steps that are useful when dealing with moisture damage to Billy shelves:

1. Remove the shelves and let them dry completely. Ideally, use dry, well-ventilated rooms, as heat (e.g., from radiators) can cause stress on the material. Duration: at least 48 hours.

2. Afterwards, carefully sand down the swollen areas using sandpaper (grit P120 or P150), then switch to finer grit (P220). The goal is to remove all raised fibers and create a as smooth surface as possible.

3. Then, treat the edges with wood filler or a special putty for small uneven spots. Some users recommend choosing a water-resistant filler, as this additionally protects the edges.

4. Finish with a water-repellent varnish: polyurethane or epoxy varnishes have proven effective since they are impact- and scratch-resistant as well as moisture-resistant.

5. To prevent further damage, make sure the shelves do not stay in contact with moisture permanently. You already mentioned that the shelf currently stands directly on the concrete floor – it is essential to create a gap here. You can use cable ducts, small wooden blocks, or plastic feet to ensure air circulation under the shelf.

6. Regarding moisture in the basement: drying with a dehumidifier can permanently improve the room climate.

If you follow these steps carefully, you should be able to noticeably extend the lifespan of your shelves.

For completely disintegrated particle boards, a replacement is the only solution. If you cannot find a suitable replacement shelf at IKEA, I recommend having waterproof boards (e.g., with melamine coating) cut to size at a specialist workshop (home improvement store or carpenter).

You have already understood the issue very well; I wish you success with the implementation!

Alternatively, you can purchase shelves made of water-resistant plywood and have them cut to size. These are significantly more resistant to moisture than the standard chipboard shelves from Billy. An additional coat of varnish provides even better protection.
