Good morning everyone, I am currently dealing with the issue of increasingly visible scratches on the surface of our KALLAX hallway unit caused by shoes being frequently placed on it. These scratches are especially noticeable on the edges and front, and they affect the overall appearance of the furniture. My question for you is: What practical and long-lasting solutions are available to prevent or at least significantly reduce shoe scratches on the KALLAX hallway unit? Are there proven table protective films, padding, or special covers suitable for this purpose? Any tips on maintenance or preventive measures to minimize abrasion are also welcome.

My suggestion to prevent scratches is a combination of mechanical protection and organizational optimization. Mechanically, transparent edge protectors or edge banding made of soft plastic are suitable, which can be easily applied by adhesive. These significantly reduce friction. From an organizational standpoint, it is important to store shoes without heavy dirt, as small stones and debris can cause additional scratches. Therefore, regular cleaning intervals for both the shoes and the hallway area are recommended.

A quick solution are also plastic protective covers for the lower part of the KALLAX, which can simply be snapped on. These are easy to remove and can be cleaned or replaced as needed.

I also recommend not placing shoes directly in front of the KALLAX, but rather to the side or in designated shoe storage units. This helps avoid unnecessary contact. Additionally, regularly wiping down fine dirt on the furniture surfaces is helpful.

That sounds very interesting. Are these edge bandings only meant for furniture edges, or can they also be applied to larger surfaces?

How much clearance would you recommend to prevent any damage? I also don’t want the hallway to become too crowded.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips so far!
