ᐅ What slope is still comfortable?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a slope from the driveway, which is 2.5m (8 feet) above garden level, so that I can also access the garden with a wheelbarrow.
To calculate the angle stones, I need to consider the slope.

What slope do you think is still manageable to avoid picking up too much speed?
Is 15° (26.79%) too steep?

What are your experiences?

Regards,
Tito

Ok, thanks for the tip.
If anyone else has experience, please share.

Hi,

um... is the question whether 26% is too steep really serious?!? Try to find a street with about 15% slope—you’ll hardly find one, and for a good reason! At 26%, you’ll have real problems even pushing an empty wheelbarrow, let alone a loaded one!
Just going by intuition, I’d say that slopes steeper than 10% are really difficult when pushing a full wheelbarrow.

Best regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas,

thank you for your comment.
Do I need to ask my neighbor if I place L-shaped retaining walls along my property line to raise part of my land?

So, to push a fully loaded wheelbarrow up into a trailer to then tip it out, we always place a plank about 1.5–2m (5–6.5 ft) long. With a bit of momentum, it easily rolls up. Here, the height difference is only about 35cm (14 inches). That would be quite a challenge with your difference. Maybe consider adding another set of stairs or building a small homemade freight lift.

Hmm... okay, I realize this isn’t very practical. Unless I create a 10% slope, but then I would need to build a 25m (82 feet) long ramp... That gets expensive. I’ll have to rethink this... I would really like to keep trash bins, bicycles, etc. in the garden and be able to access them with the ramp.

I believe that storing trash bins and bicycles in the garden is simply not the right approach for the described plot. It doesn't make sense, as you need these items at ground level or street level.
