peomarcoHello everyone, I am currently planning to customize an Ikea Pax wardrobe and want to consider a few specific aspects to ensure long-lasting enjoyment of the furniture and to optimize the storage space.
I am particularly interested in what to pay close attention to during the customization: Which materials or built-in components are especially important for stability? How can I design the interior flexibly without compromising stability? Are there techniques to secure the wardrobe to the walls without using wall anchors?
Additionally, I would like to know how modifications like adding multiple shelves or extra clothes rails affect the load capacity and whether it is better to use original parts or if suitable alternatives from hardware stores or furniture accessories are also advisable.
Thanks for your advice and experiences—I look forward to your feedback!

I am particularly interested in what to really pay attention to during the interior finishing: Which materials or components are especially important for stability? For stability, make sure to pay special attention to the back panel. It needs to be firmly screwed in and perfectly flat. I would recommend using original shelves, as they fit best and are load-bearing.

How can I design the interior flexibly without compromising stability?I can definitely relate; it was a bit of a challenge for me as well. The key is to use the appropriate rails for the shelves and avoid putting in boards that are too thin. It’s better to plan for fewer, but sturdy shelves rather than filling everything up.
Regarding wall mounting: I didn’t want to drill holes in the wall, so I used tension walls—that is, wooden beams wedged between floor and ceiling—to secure the PAX unit. This worked really well for me, but of course, it might not be for everyone.
Don’t get discouraged; it can all seem complicated the first time. It’s worth investing in good screws and original fittings.

Are there techniques to secure the wardrobe to walls if you don’t want to use wall plugs? That’s an interesting point. I recommend a combination of wall anchoring using appropriate heavy-duty anchors and additional reinforcement through, for example, furniture connectors within the wardrobe itself. If you want to avoid drilling wall plugs, you can use tension rods fixed between the floor and ceiling of the room.
Regarding components: Original parts from Ikea are generally tested for maximum load capacity and fit perfectly, especially for clothes rails or pull-out systems. Alternative products from specialist retailers can be cheaper but are not always compatible and should be carefully compared before purchase.
One more tip: Reading the Ikea assembly instructions—even though many skip them—often reveals important information about disassembly and stability that is otherwise overlooked.
