Hello everyone, I have a problem with my BILLY shelf from IKEA: the shelves wobble significantly, even though I installed them correctly. The shelves are placed in the designated holes, but they can be easily moved back and forth, which makes the unit seem unstable and is also unpleasant when placing items on it. The load is moderate, not overloaded. I don’t want to take the entire shelf apart unless it’s absolutely necessary. So my question is: what can I do if the shelves in my BILLY unit wobble even though I assembled everything correctly? Are there any proven tricks or retrofit solutions to improve the stability of the shelves? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello gunnar31,

Your issue with the wobbly shelves in the BILLY unit is actually quite common and can have several causes. First, I want to make sure you have installed the shelves correctly: This means that the metal pins supporting the shelves are properly and securely inserted into the holes and that the shelves rest flush. Sometimes the holes may no longer fit precisely due to misalignment or slight wear of the pins.

The first step is to check whether the metal pins in the side panels are fully pressed in and do not wobble or sit loosely. If a pin has some play, this can affect the entire shelf.

Additionally, it is sometimes possible to stabilize the contact points between the pins and the shelf by using small wooden wedges or thin strips of MDF or wallpaper scraps. This reduces movement and makes the shelf more stable. Be careful that the material is not too thick, otherwise the shelf will not sit properly.

Furthermore, it is helpful to occasionally check the stability of the entire shelving unit: Even if the shelf itself fits well, a slightly tilted or not perfectly level unit can cause wobbling.

I also want to ask: How old is the shelf, and has it been reassembled multiple times? In that case, some mounting points could be worn out or loose.

If you like, I can provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide on how to check the pins and carry out minor repairs.

That’s a very good point. I would add that with BILLY shelves, you can sometimes pull the pin out slightly and apply a small drop of wood glue before reinserting it – this helps it fit more securely and prevents any wobbling.

I would also recommend securing the shelf unit to the wall if that hasn’t been done yet – this makes the entire structure much more stable and reduces stress on the shelves.

If the shelves are made of wood or particleboard and show slight warping, this can also cause movement. Sometimes turning the shelves 180 degrees helps if one side is warped.

Keep at it, there is usually a simple solution! 🙂

Simply pull out the pins, place small felt pads underneath, and then push them back in. This often prevents wobbling quite effectively.

Hey, you’ll be fine! 🙂 I had the same problem with my BILLY—it’s really annoying when the shelves aren’t stable, especially when you want to place something on them.

What I did was simply stick small silicone pads under the shelves that are specifically made for furniture. They’re very thin, don’t slip, and provide great stability! Plus, it’s an invisible solution and you can easily remove it anytime.

Give it a try—sometimes those little helpers make all the difference! Good luck, and let me know how it goes 🙂
