Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm dresser with several drawers, and I’ve noticed that one drawer doesn’t open fully. It stops just before the end of the track and won’t pull out any further, which makes loading and unloading difficult. I’ve already checked for any obstructions but don’t see any obvious cause. Are there common reasons why a Malm drawer might not open completely? And most importantly, how can I fix this issue with minimal effort? Could I have adjusted the slides incorrectly, or is this caused by a built-in safety mechanism? I appreciate any help!
Hello teron,
I am familiar with your issue, as the Malm drawers have a special sliding rail system that actually prevents full extension – there is a built-in safety mechanism that stops the drawer from falling out completely.
First, you should check if the drawer slides are installed correctly:
1. Pull the drawer fully out and look at the sides to see if both sides engage evenly with the sliding rails.
2. Check if the rails are not too loose or too tight due to screws, as incorrect tension often leads to blockages.
3. Sometimes the locking catch that secures the drawer gets stuck if it doesn’t move smoothly.
A mechanism that often causes problems is the small plastic stop at the rear end of the rail – it prevents the drawer from falling out, but if it’s damaged or bent, it can rub and block the drawer.
I would also recommend thoroughly cleaning the rails from dust and debris, as dirt can also hinder smooth movement.
Are there any other noticeable issues like unusual noises when opening or stiff movement that you have observed? Your detailed description would help further!

Great that you brought up the Malm drawer issue here, teron! :-) I had exactly the same problem and was initially quite frustrated, but luckily it’s fairly easy to fix.
What helped me was pulling the drawer out completely and checking the sliding mechanism to see if everything moves freely. I tightened the screws a bit and then reinstalled the drawer. After that, everything worked smoothly again. It’s definitely worth taking a careful look and not rushing.
A practical tip: When putting the drawer back in, make sure the rail clicks in on both sides at the same time, otherwise you won’t be able to slide the drawer in properly. It sounds simple, but this is often the tricky part! 🙂
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you find the solution soon – you’ll get it!

Hello teron,
I’d like to provide you with a brief step-by-step guide that can help you identify and fix the reason why your Malm drawer isn’t fully opening:
1. Fully pull out the drawer: Carefully pull the drawer out until it can be removed to access the slides.
2. Check the drawer slides: Inspect both slides carefully from the side. On the cabinet side (attached to the furniture body) and on the drawer side, the tracks should be clean and undamaged.
3. Cleaning: Remove dust, lint, or any dirt from the slides using a dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner attachment.
4. Inspect the stop mechanism: As Dilen already mentioned, the Malm drawer has a built-in plastic stop. Check whether it is stuck or broken.
5. Check the installation: Problems often occur if the screws holding the slides are either too loose or too tight. Both conditions can prevent smooth movement.
6. Functional test: Reinsert the drawer and slowly move it back and forth. Make sure the slide clicks and locks audibly and noticeably.
If the drawer still does not open fully, check whether the back panel of the drawer or the inside of the cabinet is deformed. Also, a shortened drawer or the installation of an additional shelf can cause such blockages.
I hope this guide helps you. 🙂 If you’d like, feel free to provide more information, for example, how old the chest of drawers is or if you have taken it apart and reassembled it before.

Checking and cleaning the drawer slides I will take a closer look and clean them this evening. The dresser is just under 3 years old and has never been disassembled before.
If the instructions don’t help me, I will gladly ask again. Thanks so far! 🙂
