Hello everyone,
I recently moved and reassembled my Malm furniture from Ikea. Unfortunately, I noticed that some of the drawer fronts and side panels are slightly warped. This not only looks unattractive but also affects the function to some extent, as the drawers are harder to open and close.
My specific question is: What do you do when Malm furniture is warped? Are there any ways to reshape the wood or particleboard panels, or at least minimize the damage? I understand that MDF and particleboard don’t react like solid wood, and I’m concerned that heat or moisture might do more harm than good.
Has anyone had experience with how to proceed without damaging the surface? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hello everyone,
I’d like to add some input based on my experience: Warping in Malm furniture usually occurs because the back panels and sides are relatively thin and therefore quickly respond to changes in ambient humidity.
What helped me was placing the furniture in a well-ventilated but not too humid area and simply allowing it to acclimate over a few weeks. Over time, the warping became less noticeable. It’s important not to keep the furniture in direct sunlight or in overly dry rooms with strong heating.
If there are clearly visible distortions, you can try carefully pulling the shape back into place using small boards and clamps. However, be cautious when tightening the clamps to avoid adding too much stress to the wood and causing the veneer to crack.

Apply moisture deliberately and moderately, for example by placing a damp cloth on the backside for a short timeI can only agree with that. Additionally, I recommend laying the furniture parts flat and applying some weight to them afterward. This allows the fibers to relax gradually. Patience is really important here, because if you proceed too quickly, the material can break or the veneer can be damaged.

Tips for common mistakes Thank you very much for the clear explanation! That already helps me a lot. I actually considered using a hairdryer to warm up the material, but since you don’t recommend that, I’ll avoid doing so.

Do not leave furniture in the sun or in rooms that are too dry due to strong heating So I’ll first place the dresser in a neutral room that is neither too humid nor too dry and balance the furniture accordingly.
My last question for now: Do I have to remove the drawers during this “acclimatization phase,” or is it okay to leave them in? Thanks again for the tips!

Do I absolutely have to remove the drawers for this "settling phase," or can they stay in?You can leave the drawers in as long as they remain movable. Especially with MALM, the runners are sturdy enough to carry the extra weight. However, I recommend removing them if there is significant warping, so the furniture can settle evenly and avoid uneven stress.

If that happens, it’s better to remove them temporarily to protect the mechanism or readjust them.
And one more important point: avoid excessive moisture from outside, as the furniture material is very sensitive to it.
