Hello everyone, I want to paint my Ikea Besta furniture to give it a fresher and, above all, more durable finish. However, I’m wondering which preparations and steps are really necessary to ensure that the paint not only looks good but also lasts long. My main concerns are the smooth plastic surfaces and edges, which are not exactly ideal for painting. What type of primer is best, how should sanding be done, and which types of paint are recommended? I’m also curious about the proper drying times and whether intermediate sanding is needed. I’m looking forward to practical answers and tips so I don’t miss anything important and end up with a finish that is prone to damage.

Yes, basically the same steps apply to the edges as well. However, the edges are often less smooth, which actually helps the paint adhere better. Still, I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the edges, lightly sanding them, and treating them with the same primer.

If the edges are subject to more wear, a durable two-component (2K) paint is helpful, as it is somewhat more flexible and less prone to chipping. It is also important not to apply paint layers too thickly on sharp edges, as this can cause them to crack more easily.

Another option for heavily stressed edges is to apply a thin protective layer of clear spray to seal the paint.
