Hello everyone, I am currently planning to modify an Ikea Hemnes bed and have some concerns I’m unsure about. Specifically, I am thinking about the stability after the modification, choosing replacement parts or additional screws, the right tools to use, as well as potential changes to the frame structure that I should consider. I am also interested in experiences regarding load-bearing capacity after modifications and how to avoid common issues like squeaky joints. Are there any specific tips or common mistakes to avoid when modifying a HEMNES bed? I look forward to detailed advice that will help me carry out the modification in a technically sound and safe way.
Thanks for the tips so far! I have a question about the choice of materials: Does anyone have experience with replacing the original pine wood components with multiplex plywood panels without any issues? I’m thinking of a substructure that should be more stable and also offers different design possibilities visually. Are there common problems with screws or the weight? Also, I’m interested in how to ensure that the altered mattress height still fits the slatted frame.

Does anyone have experience with replacing the original pine wood components with plywood panels without any issues? Plywood is generally more stable, but the fastening method is usually different. The original screws are designed for solid wood; with plywood, you should use appropriate insert nuts or machine screws to avoid damaging the frames.

how to ensure that the changed mattress height still fits the slatted bed base. It is important to measure the total height of the new bed frame, including the plywood base, compared to the original setup. Make sure the mattress does not press against or block the slatted frame, as this can negatively affect comfort.
Multiplex is usually heavier than pine wood. Screw connections need to be adjusted, as regular wood screws do not always hold well. To determine mattress height, simply measure the height of the new bed frame plus the mattress and compare it with the previous sleeping height.
