Hello everyone, I am currently preparing to install some Ikea Metod wall cabinets and am unsure about the appropriate screw length. The cabinets need to be securely mounted to the wall, but the back panel and mounting rail already add some thickness. I am wondering what screw length would be optimal so that the screws are long enough to provide sufficient support in the wall, but not so long that they penetrate through the wall or other materials. Specifically, what screw length is recommended for mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets on a typical drywall (plasterboard) or concrete wall to ensure secure hold and long-lasting load-bearing capacity? Perhaps someone has experience with different screw lengths and materials and can share their insights. Thanks in advance!
Interesting question that is often underestimated. I would argue that the screw length is a mystery for many Ikea buyers, who tend to overcompensate out of caution or lack of knowledge. However, longer screws do not automatically provide better holding power, especially with drywall, where this can cause issues. I would rather recommend choosing the screw length so that it grips the wall materials optimally – long enough, but not excessively so. Still, I wonder: what about the load? Will the cabinet be fully loaded or remain mostly light? Perhaps the screw length should also depend on the weight it needs to support.

Longer screws do not automatically mean better hold, especially with drywall this can cause problems. Exactly, using screws that are too long in drywall can even reduce stability if the anchor is not designed for it. So it’s better not to rely solely on length.
