Hello everyone, I am interested in the maximum load capacity of the IKEA Brimnes shelves. Could you please tell me the rated load these shelves can support? It would be important for me to know whether these values refer to the individual shelves or the entire unit. I am planning to store some heavy books and technical equipment on them and want to make sure the shelves are not overloaded. Are there any differences depending on the size or design of the Brimnes series, or are there any tips on how to increase the load capacity? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, that’s a great question because many people underestimate the weight limits of IKEA furniture! 😃 For the Brimnes shelves, the maximum load per shelf is usually around 15 kg to 20 kg (33 to 44 lbs), depending on the design and material. However, you should definitely make sure to distribute the weight evenly to avoid sagging boards. If you want to store heavy items like books and equipment, it’s better not to pack the entire shelf fully but to spread the load across several shelves! Many members here in the forum have had good experiences with this, so don’t worry, it will work out fine!

The load capacity per shelf for Brimnes shelving units is usually around 15 kg (33 lbs). Fully loaded shelves with five boards can therefore hold approximately 75 kg (165 lbs). However, the exact load capacity is best found in the assembly instructions or product datasheet.

For technical clarification: The load capacity of the IKEA Brimnes shelves is generally specified as around 15 kg per shelf level (33 pounds). The total load is calculated by multiplying the number of shelves by the individual load capacity. This refers to static loads evenly distributed across the entire shelf surface. It is always important to follow the assembly instructions carefully, especially ensuring correct anchoring to the wall to prevent tipping accidents. Differences in load capacity between individual models within the Brimnes series are minimal, as the base materials and construction method are similar. Note: These specifications apply to normal household loads; point loads or dynamic loads must be assessed separately.

Thank you for the clear summary. Are there any practical experiences regarding whether this value is realistic, or if the shelves can actually hold more than 15 kg under normal use without damage? I ask because some furniture often supports more than the official rating, as long as it is handled carefully.

I personally tested my Brimnes shelf by placing a few stacks of books and small electronic devices distributed across one shelf. Most of the time, it was around 20 kg (44 lbs) per shelf, and the shelf remained very stable! The key point is to avoid placing heavy objects on a small area and instead spread the weight evenly. Of course, you shouldn’t deliberately push the limits, but as a general guideline, 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf is a completely safe value.
