Hello everyone, I am considering what protective measures are useful for an IKEA Besta living room furniture piece when you have pets in the household. Specifically, I’m interested in tips on how to protect the furniture from damage caused by cat or dog claws, such as scratches, and also how to prevent pets from climbing into the compartments and breaking or soiling items. Which materials, covers, or other protective solutions have proven effective in practice? Are there any practical modifications that can be made directly to the Besta to improve stability or protection? I’m looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

I would like to go into more detail about the issue here, as the IKEA BESTA furniture type is especially versatile and features different surface materials and constructions.

Thanks for the detailed information, minan! Our surface is laminated, so transparent films should be suitable.

For protection against pets getting into the compartments, childproof locks are recommended to prevent them from opening doors or drawers.

I hadn’t considered childproof locks before, that sounds very promising. Which models are recommended that can be flexibly attached to the BESTA shelves? Is drilling necessary for installation?

What about your situation—do you have a particular type of pet or specific level of wear and tear?

We have two cats who are very curious; I’ve already experienced a few “claw attacks.” Providing alternative scratching options is therefore a good idea, I think.
