Hello everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea Metod kitchen and have now reached the stage of choosing countertops. Since Metod countertops are often made of coated wood-based materials, I wonder what specific protection I should consider during use to ensure they last as long as possible. What care instructions are useful? Are there any special treatments or protective measures I need to apply to the surface to minimize damage from water, heat, or scratches? I would appreciate tips based on experience or expert knowledge!

So: buy the cut-to-size at Ikea, saves trouble and money for reworking! 🙂 That sounds reasonable, thank you. Are there any additional tips for protecting against discoloration or cleaning agents? I want to avoid the countertop becoming dull or stained due to improper cleaners.Regarding cleaning and preventing discoloration:
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or products containing acetone or ammonia.
- Mild soapy water or dishwashing detergent is completely sufficient.
- Avoid leaving strongly staining substances such as beetroot or spices on the surface, as they can leave marks.
- If stains do appear, try to remove them immediately.
Additional tip: After cleaning, wipe the surface with a dry cloth to prevent moisture from lingering.

Additionally, based on my research, special laminate care products or polishes can be applied at intervals (e.g., every 6 months) to help protect the surface against scratches and wear. However, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid staining or residue buildup.
Thank you for all the helpful answers! I understand that the most important protection for Metod panels from IKEA is to avoid moisture on the edges, not to expose the panels to direct heat, and to reduce mechanical stress caused by cutting boards. It also makes sense to seal the cut edges if you cut the panel yourself or to have the cutting done directly at IKEA. For cleaning, I use a mild soapy solution and wipe the surface dry. I guess I will have to accept some aesthetic limitations in case of scratches. If I have any further questions, I will definitely reach out again!
