Hello everyone, I am currently looking into furniture quality more closely and have a specific question: What problems tend to occur with Ikea Hemnes desks when used over a longer period of time? I am especially interested in aspects such as material quality, everyday stability, structural weaknesses, issues with the surface, or any difficulties during assembly. Experiences with the different versions of the Hemnes desk are also very welcome. The goal is to get a well-informed assessment of durability and practical usability. Thanks in advance for your help!

Typical issues often include loose screws after some time and surfaces that quickly develop stains when exposed to moisture.

The Hemnes desk is made from solid wood, usually pine. The wood tends to swell in high humidity, which can affect its stability. The joints, especially in the drawer slides, are prone to looseness and wear. Surface coatings are relatively thin, making them susceptible to scratches and moisture damage.

Installation can be a bit tricky, especially the drawers. If you’re not precise, they may jam or not slide smoothly later on.

I have had the desk for about 2 years. Overall, I am satisfied, but after some time the edges of the tabletop have developed slight chipping. It’s annoying because I often run my hand along the edges. I hope it doesn’t get any worse.

That’s interesting—did you notice this mainly under heavy use, or more as a general quality issue? One might assume that frequent use would cause these problems sooner, but perhaps the technical design in that area is also suboptimal?
