Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit soon and would like to know in advance which problems occur most frequently. I have the impression that many people mainly have difficulties with installing the back panel or the screw connections, but I am especially interested in whether there are often fit issues or if any steps in the instructions are unclear and lead to mistakes. Who has experience with this and can specifically describe where the biggest challenges typically lie? In particular, I would like to know if the wood material or the fastening system is more often the cause of problems, and how to best prevent such errors.

I think it is important to differentiate more precisely here. Many problems probably stem from the type of screws supplied and the typical IKEA two-component fastening systems, which are sometimes less intuitive than expected. In my experience, the accuracy of the drill holes rarely presents a real issue; rather, the instructions are often too minimalistic.

This could be seen as a systematic flaw on IKEA’s part, increasing assembly time and frustration. However, this should hardly pose a problem for experienced DIYers – basic craftsmanship skills play a major role here.

From my experience: The back panel must be installed straight; otherwise, there will be problems. Screw in carefully, as plastic anchors can break easily.

Pay attention to the drill holes in the wooden parts, as they are sometimes slightly misaligned. This can make assembly more difficult and may cause stability issues.

I have to disagree. Especially with furniture lines like HEMNES, I’ve noticed that IKEA is increasingly cutting back on quality to reduce costs. The drill holes are often not precisely positioned, which leads to stress and poorly fitting joints. This is not an isolated case but part of a trend towards mass production with minimal tolerances.

So, anyone who wants to enjoy assembling their furniture in the long term should consider spending a few more dollars on better-crafted materials.

Thanks for raising that point. Could you describe it in more detail? Are you referring to a general misalignment issue, or is it more about some holes being drilled deeper or shallower? I’m also aware of material stress caused by incorrect assembly from my experience, but what are the most common consequences in your case? Warping, splitting, or even cracks?
