DagaraHello everyone,
I joined this forum because I’m looking for experiences with the IKEA Brimnes shelving units. Here’s my situation: with my second shelf, I’ve noticed several issues that I didn’t expect.
- Firstly, some of the wooden parts seem unevenly finished, which affects both stability and alignment.
- Also, the screws on the back panel don’t seem to hold properly, causing some wobbling.
- Lastly, I found parts of the assembly instructions unclear, which made putting it together more difficult.
I’m interested to know if others have experienced similar problems with their Brimnes shelves. If so, how did you deal with them? Are there any tips on what to pay attention to during assembly, or any quality-related advice to keep in mind?
I look forward to your feedback!

Hey Dagara, I really appreciate you bringing up this topic! I recently assembled Brimnes shelves too – and yes, IKEA can always be a bit tricky.
For me, the main issue was the fit of the boards. Some of the holes were either too tight or drilled crookedly, which made the assembly quite fiddly.
I know exactly what you mean! The back panel was a real hassle for me as well; I had to readjust the screws several times before the shelf finally stood firmly.
Still, it’s worth pushing through – in the end, you’ll have a sturdy piece of furniture! Don’t get discouraged and good luck with the assembly 🙂

I would like to provide some context regarding the issue: The Brimnes series is positioned in the low-price segment, which naturally affects material quality and manufacturing tolerances.
I consider this a general shortcoming in furniture of this category. It would be interesting to know if there are systematic differences between different production batches.
In my opinion, this strongly depends on the load and also on the use of the recommended support brackets. In general, I advise not to exceed the specified load to prevent material fatigue.
I would also question why IKEA does not use thicker material here, which would reduce the risk of sagging. Insights on this would be interesting.

To complement the previous contributions: The Brimnes shelves are generally made of particleboard with a laminated finish. This means they are somewhat susceptible to moisture, so the location of the shelf should be taken into account.
- Irregularities in the workmanship may be due to transport or manufacturing defects. It is advisable to check the delivered parts against the packing list.
- The stability of the back panel largely depends on correct assembly. It is recommended to attach the back panel last, after all components have been properly snapped into place.
- Regarding sagging: IKEA specifies the maximum load per shelf, so I would not exceed that figure.
If stability issues persist, it may be worth considering adding extra brackets or reinforcements without affecting the appearance of the furniture.

I would like to add that after assembling my shelf, I checked with a spirit level to make sure everything was straight. It’s important not to tighten the screws too much, otherwise the panels tend to warp!
That’s really great advice – I ignored it the first time and struggled for ages.
Also, I once had a small shortage of screws, so it’s best to lay everything out calmly and count them!
I think if you approach it with some patience, you can achieve a neat result. So don’t give up!
