haukarHello everyone, I am currently working on assembling an IKEA Malm wardrobe and would like to ask specifically about common mistakes that often occur during the process.
I am especially interested in which potential errors to watch out for when assembling the Malm, meaning which pitfalls or tricky parts are best to know about in order to save time and avoid frustration.
Specifically: Are there components that are easily confused with others? How critical are the positions of screws or dowels? And are there common mistakes that are easy to overlook but can later cause significant problems with stability or functionality?
I look forward to your experiences, particularly practical tips and advice on errors that even professionals sometimes make. Thank you in advance!

Are there building components that are easy to confuse?Oh yes, I know that all too well! The back panels of the Malm often consist of wood parts that look identical but have different drill holes or edges. It’s easy to mix them up and end up having to fix it later.
The screws can also be so similar that you often grab the wrong ones by mistake. Tip: Sort and label the screws beforehand to make it much easier. 😊
But don’t worry, with some patience and organization, the assembly usually goes quite smoothly!
Regarding haukar’s question about common mistakes, I would like to go into more detail:
A classic error is the incorrect order when assembling the side panels and back panels. If the back panel is attached too early, screws on the sides can only be driven in with great effort, which may weaken the wood structure.
Furthermore, I recommend paying close attention to the position and alignment of the wooden dowels. A frequent mistake is using dowels twisted or inadequately glued in – this leads to unstable joints that can become noticeably loose later on.
The installation of drawer slides also requires precision, especially with Malm furniture, as incorrect alignment causes sticking drawers and uneven gaps. I strongly advise checking and adjusting the slides several times before final screwing.
Have you already gained some assembly experience or are there specific steps you find challenging?

A common mistake is confusing the types of screws. Shorter wood screws are often mixed up with long screws.
It is also important to avoid over-tightening the screws, as this can loosen the wood.
Otherwise, always check the fit of all parts before firmly fastening them together.

I look forward to your experiences, especially practical tips and warnings about mistakes that even professionals sometimes make.I’m happy to provide you with a structured overview of the typical sources of errors during the Malm assembly, which I have often observed or experienced myself:
1. Mixing up left/right side panels or back panel segments. This leads to misaligned holes. Always double-check the drill patterns before assembly.
2. Incorrect insertion of dowels: If wooden dowels are not fully and straightly inserted, stability can be significantly compromised. Unevenly glued dowels cause wobbling.
3. Using the wrong screws: Some screws look similar but have different lengths or threads. Pay close attention to the instructions here.
4. Not following the correct order: Usually, the assembly instructions provide a logical sequence of steps. Tightening screws too early can cause misalignment.
5. Neglecting the alignment of drawer slides or handles: This later results in drawers that hang or stick.
6. Attaching the back panel unevenly or too early: The back panel adds stability when mounted properly, but it can hinder assembly if fixed too early or crookedly.
In summary: Always double-check before each step that the correct part is in the right place, and it’s better to measure one time too many than not enough.
If you want, I can also explain individual steps in more detail.

Tightening screws too early can cause misalignment.\This is really important! I’ve experienced it myself: if you tighten something too early, you can end up with serious problems because the wood can’t be properly aligned anymore.
And honestly, a little patience when screwing doesn’t hurt anyone. 😉
Also, you often see this with Malm: the small hooks and dowels used to clip drawer fronts are delicate, so you shouldn’t be too rough here, or handles and fronts will end up crooked.
