ᐅ What is the typical cost of recessed ceiling lights (installed by a general contractor in a new build)?

Hello,

when planning the lighting, I was a bit shocked when our construction consultant quoted 200 EUR per recessed ceiling spotlight. These are to be installed in the precast concrete ceiling. With 46 ceiling spotlights throughout the house, that would amount to 9,200 EUR. Is this a normal price for materials and labor from a general contractor in 2020? Of course, I lack alternatives regarding the spotlights since the precast ceiling is being installed by the general contractor’s scope of work.

Thank you!

65 €, as you can tell, there is no “standard” price. It depends on the area and the level of finish.

What exactly do you have in mind when you say ceiling spotlights? What kind of junction boxes will your general contractor install in the ceiling?

Just the fact that you would have to pay 800 euros and even in the cheapest case mentioned here 260 euros for such utility rooms like the pantry would make me reconsider my lighting plan.

With these amounts, you can also work with lighting designers, and in the end, it might still be more cost-effective. But then you might get much nicer light sources.

Well, maybe I’m just different.

They won’t hesitate. Concrete mounting boxes will be installed at the factory and that’s it.

My question was whether only one concrete mounting box is ordered, or if the desired fixtures have been compared to the size of the box.

Considering the number of spotlights mentioned here, I would also recommend consulting a lighting designer. An experienced lighting designer can make a good layout based on experience, often with high accuracy, and if that’s not sufficient, a lighting plan is usually created using Dialux. Above all, a lighting designer will not only work with spotlights but also suggest a variety of other lighting options, which in some cases might be a better solution. Just using spotlights would not be my choice, as there are more interesting options available.

130 euros per recessed light outlet without fixture.
I also tried to plan a few recessed lights. Probably too many as well.
Would anyone like to take a look or make me a suggestion?
I want recessed lights in the hallways, kitchen, and bathrooms on the upper floor.
I don’t want to overdo it.

Is that supposed to be a lot?

Yes – from the perspective of “lighting comfort.”

That equals less than one spotlight per 2 m² (21.5 ft²) in the rooms mentioned, which is well below the guideline I know.

If you view lighting purely functionally and don’t plan additional accent lighting, you’re doing exactly what someone does who wants to seat eight people in the living room and buys a beer bench set.
If you consider accent and ambient lighting – why do you need that many spotlights?
If you use recessed ceiling lights that can also serve as accent lights, you will never get away with spending only €200 (euros) per fixture.

Walk through buildings and houses, including hotels, and pay attention to the lighting and what feels comfortable. Then reconsider. If you stick with many spotlights, that’s probably your personal preference. If not, you have counteracted a reduction in living quality in your own home.
