Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: What materials does Ikea use for the Brimnes drawers?

I would like to know whether the drawers are made of solid wood, engineered wood, or a combination, as I consider the material important for durability and environmental impact. I am also interested in details about the surface finish and any metal parts inside the drawers, such as the type of runners or fittings used.

Can anyone share their experience or provide reliable information? Thanks in advance!

The Brimnes drawers are mainly made of particleboard with a foil coating. The slides are usually made of metal and plastic. Solid wood is not used here.

I am happy to provide a more detailed explanation regarding this question:

The Ikea Brimnes drawers are mainly made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard, which is then coated with melamine or covered with a laminate. These surfaces provide a smooth, wipeable finish and protect against moisture. The material is cost-effective while still offering good stability for normal household use.

Additionally, the back panels are often made from thinner particleboard, which saves resources and reduces the weight of the furniture.

For the drawer runners, Ikea typically uses metal runners with plastic rollers. These allow for smooth and easy opening and closing. In some models, metal rail systems are also used, which are smooth-running and durable.

Summary:
- Carcass & drawers: particleboard/MDF with laminate or melamine coating
- Back panels: thinner particleboard
- Runners & fittings: metal and plastic

It is important to note that Ikea uses little to no solid wood in the Brimnes models in order to keep the final price low.

Thanks for the overview, Guyju! Do you think the melamine-coated surface is also fairly resistant to moisture? I want to place the furniture in a bedroom where humid air can occasionally occur.

Also, it would be interesting to know if the laminate film can be easily damaged when opening the drawers, or if the workmanship really feels high-quality. Thanks in advance!

From my experience, the melamine-coated surface is well protected against moisture, but permanent water accumulation should be avoided.

The foil coating is generally quite durable, although sharp objects or rough handling can cause minor damage. Therefore, I recommend careful use, especially in more humid rooms.

If you clean the surface regularly and avoid aggressive cleaning agents, the Brimnes drawer will last a long time.

Looking at the interior, the metal runners are very sturdy and durable.

If you like, I can also tell you something about the ecological aspects of these materials.
