Hello everyone, I am currently planning the lighting for my IKEA Platsa shelving system and would like to ask about the available lighting options that can be well integrated into modular shelving units. It is important to me how easy the installation is, whether there are specific LED solutions that work well together, and if anyone has experience with dimmable or color-changing lights. I am also interested in which options are reasonably priced and if there are any limitations regarding power supply or cable management. I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

There are mainly three lighting options for the IKEA PLATSA system: First, the original IKEA LED strips, which integrate well and are specifically designed for furniture. Many users also opt for flexible LED tape lights, which can be attached using clips or double-sided tape. These often come with dimmer and color-changing functions, but you need to manage the power supply and controls yourself. Third, traditional spotlights or recessed lights are an option that require drilling for installation, which involves more effort. It’s important to plan the cable routing carefully to ensure a clean installation without any loose wires.

Original IKEA LED strips are practical because they are easy to install and compatible. Dimming is sometimes possible via IKEA Tradfri. Alternatively, LED strips with USB connectors are flexible and cost-effective.

I can recommend the original IKEA LED strips, as they are specifically designed for furniture and are fairly easy to install. If you want a dimmable solution, you can use the IKEA Tradfri remote control. LED strips work well, offering more flexibility in color options and length, but they require more planning for power supply. With all options, make sure the heat generation is low, since PLATSA shelves are usually made of wood-based materials. You can also look for external built-in lights that you can recess or glue in, but this is more labor-intensive.

Thanks for the tip, julian36. Could you please explain in more detail how the IKEA LED strips work for installation on the PLATSA shelving unit? Are there mounting clips or a special installation kit? How is the cable management handled along the sides or back panels of the shelves?

Is the compatibility with Tradfri generally trouble-free? And is it common to have a power connection directly to the shelving unit, or is it more usual to run wiring to the nearest outlet? I want to keep it as unobtrusive as possible.

The IKEA LED strips for furniture come with mounting clips or adhesive tape, making installation very easy. The clips can be attached to the inside of the shelves, and they are usually quite discreet and easy to adjust. Regarding cable management: The back panel of PLATSA is removable, allowing cables to be routed behind it without being visible. Power often needs to be connected to the nearest outlet, as there is no internal wiring. The PLATSA shelves are generally not designed for internal electrical circuits. For a tidy solution, cable ducts or self-adhesive cable clips are recommended.
