ᐅ What types of boundaries or fences are permitted? Is a bamboo hedge allowed?

Hi everyone!

Since we don’t want a fence and I have always wanted a bamboo hedge, I’m now in a bit of a tricky situation with my property.

The local authority requires us to implement one of the following three ecological measures:
A) Rainwater cistern
B) Solar system
C) Garden planting with native trees and shrubs

The development plan also states that we must plant two native fruit or deciduous trees.

Regarding boundaries, there is an additional rule: “Instead of fences, the planting of hedges up to a maximum height of 2.0 meters (6.6 feet) is allowed (lower reference point: road surface level of the public street traffic area/traffic area with special purpose designation at the street boundary line; upper reference point: top of the hedge), using native, site-appropriate deciduous woody plants.”

For the required measures, I would obviously choose option C), but there are no specified quantities, so for me, planting the two trees would already fulfill the requirement...

Is there any way to plant a bamboo hedge, for example on my property side, not directly at the boundary line?

Thanks in advance!

Although this is off-topic, when I read this, I wonder what these local councils actually think, trying to dictate the choice of plants to the property owner. Clearly, you wouldn’t release orangutans into the forest here in Germany—it’s bad enough that they already worship wolves—but plants? If bamboo or a palm tree can grow here, let it be. And it surely can’t be a matter of taste—my house, my land, my rubber plant. That’s how I see it. Karsten
Oh dear, you wouldn’t like to see our zoning plan [emoji85][emoji23] Long live the hedgehog [emoji16]

2.6.2 Fences must be designed so they do not obstruct the movement of small animals up to hedgehog size (wooden fences, wide-mesh wire fences). Walls and wall bases are not permitted. In the front garden zone, fences are prohibited at the building boundary facing the public road up to a depth of 5.0 meters (16 feet) or 3.0 meters (10 feet), depending on the area.

2.6.3 At least 80% of the undeveloped land on the property must be landscaped as garden or green space. These areas must include at least 30% tree and shrub plantings according to the planting list (1 tree = 10 m² (108 sq ft), 1 shrub = 1 m² (11 sq ft)).

2.6.4 Building facades without windows that exceed 5.0 meters (16 feet) in width must be covered with climbing plants or espalier fruit trees as specified in the planting list. For flat roofs and pitched roofs with less than 20° slope, green roofs are required.

I’ll spare you the planting list [emoji85][emoji28]

Oh, and because of the hedgehogs, some people now have to modify their already built L-shaped retaining walls (or partially demolish them). No L-shaped retaining wall is allowed every 10 meters (33 feet); instead, a ramp for hedgehogs must be provided.

Are hedgehogs protected by nature conservation laws?

A toast to the hedgehogs!

Fortunately, we don’t have one of those plots of land where you have to create a habitat for the sand lizard.

PUUH. Ost.R. Ganselmann and the environmental department clerk of the district, Ms. Stolte-Kirschholzer, have prevailed completely.

Once everything is completed, it will probably be a very nice residential area!
